Default Thorton....okay?

I recently bought a retail Athlon XP 2200+ (256kb L2, 266mHz bus, Thoroughbred core is what was advertised). It works speedy-great, but one thing is a bit strange. When I open up CPUZ, it tells me that the core is actualy a thorton, not a t-bred.

This is a little known core, but if memory serves isn't a thorton just a barty with half the L2 cache? So I should be pleased, not pissed, right?

Another thing, it's idling at about 65 degrees. Apparently this is in spec for a Thoroughbred-A core, but what about a thorton? Thanks.

65C is definitely on the high side of normal to say the least, I've seen barton 2500's with stock coolers idling under 50C, I'm thinking the heatsink is either mounted incorrectly or you used too much thermal grease.

I'd replace the stock HSF with at least a ThermalRight ALX-800, and use AS5 thermal paste.

Anyway, you should be able to pull 3200+ speeds out of that chip with no more than 1.75v.

I'm using a Silentbreeze III heatsink (and yes, the fan is spinning), so it should be cooling properly. The only thermal paste I put on is what was on the heatsink already. And it's not overclocked at all. (Well.....right now, that is )

But could anyone clarify this Thorton thing for me? Is it just CPUZ reading it wrong, or did I get ripped off? Maybe the opposite?

A Thorten is just basically a locked version of the 2400+ T-Bred, there is no real major difference for all intent and purpose.

It is said to be a Barton core with with half the cache disabled as you mentioned, I don't think there is any real performance difference at stock speed, Overclockablity should be comparable.

Remove the thermal pad that came affixed to the bottom of the heatsink, clean both the HS base and die
with acetone or alcohol on a paper towel, and apply a thin coat of Artic Silver 5 or Ceramique to the CPU die.

Temps should drop a good bit after you've done this.

That got the temps down to 58 degrees idle. Quite an improvement from 65 degrees.

But does anyone know if this is in spec for a thorton?

How rectangular does the die appear? The Thorton/Barton die is much more elongated than the Thoroughbred die upon inspection.
