Default Which XP1800+ Do I Have? I Can't Figure Out

I got my new present. An MSI KT333 RAID MOBO, and Athlon XP1800+. The thing is I can't figure out weather I have the normal version or the Throughbred version. It's the 1.5 Volt version if that helps. I really want to know weather I have a Throughbred or not without taking off the Volcano 9 Heatsink cuz its a pain in the asshole to take it off.

if it's running at 1.5v,it should be a thoroughbred.that's the good news.the bad news is that i think it's a revision a.
without pulling the sink,i would just clock it and see where it runs out of headroom.

the difference in rev a and rev b is a matter of how well they o/c.
rev b's tend to clock a little better and have a slightly larger die for more contact area on the sink.
but like any cpu,it really comes down to the individual chip itself.

That article was so helpful it was actually scary I've also concluded that a Tbred B is not to be found unless you're buying a 2400+ or higher :\

Which is good, because then if I wait, prices will drop!! Tbred B's will cost as much as Pal's and Pal's will cost as much as PII's

I have another question, that is quite similarly related to my first question. The question is, my Athlon XP1800+ T-Bred A was unlocked when I got it, why is it already unlocked, its too pathetically easy to overclock and underclock its not even funny. I love the fact that its unlocked, for some games I run at 6.0 multiplyer at 133FSB so I can actually play them at a normal speed rather than too fast, that I can't actually play the game . I love my new 1800+ T-Bred A. It's my second baby. My first baby is my Girlfriend; Abigail.

Jesus Chiquita, what can I say ?

It's unlocked because they all are, and because AMD decided to do it that way again. Older AMD processors were always unlocked a few years back.

As for underclocking to slow your game down, it's way to late to even get into that

Oki Doki. Thanks Icpiper. I can always coun't on your knowledge. . The thing I want to know is why have they gone back to having their processors unlocked, after having them locked for a few years. Too many RMA's?.

That could very well be part of it, if they leave them unlocked, then they save their distributers and themselves some hassles, and they save another step in production cutting costs a little.

And it makes absolutely no difference at all to the vast majority who don't OC, but makes big friends with the ones that do

So why has locking even been considered as something to do??

Intel started it first awhile back.

But for AMD, I think they thought it would sell more new CPUs if they were harder to OC and that's where the biggest profit is.

Oh I see, a you're getting what you pay for, and nothing more.
Guess it didn't work out for them. I feel bad for AMD, they need some major fundage

Yeah AMD could go bankrupt as soon as may but the upside is they will probably get bought by someone as we all know that would be in the best interests for all of us. Otherwise Intel would reign the Cpu world and no one wants that! Yes T-Bred B is better but really T-Bred A is not bad it just looses its head room after 1.8ghz but a 1.53ghz 1800+ to 1.8ghz 2200+ would still be nice Another thing T-Bred Bs are only for 2400+ and above I doubt amd will release T-Bred B for lower speeds as much as many of you want its not in AMD's best interests hehe

DAMN IT! Oh well If I can overclock my T-Bred A to 1.8ghz(2200+) then that'd be sweet. I still got lots of head room for this little puppy, when I need it. I won't be Overclocking anytime soon, unless Simcity 4 really needs it. I really need a new Graphics Card though. I probably will wait until the new nVidia chip comes out, and see if prices on Ati's card's drop.
