Default upgrade opinions

Okay fellow pimps. My buddy at work came to me tonite and wants to upgrade his p3 733 to something new. He's got a budget of $500. He's not looking to mod (basterd), he's not looking to overclock, and he's not looking for power cooling. He's just looking for stocl beige performance out of the box. He plays a lot of games (ghost recon and tom clancy style sh!t), he's got a 64mb radeon agp card. he wants good sound and 512mb of ram.

thanx in advance...

Thats a nice bit of money to spend for an upgrade but, what kind of case or comp does he have? Will his current case support other mobo's cuz I know Gateway comps are so dam proprietary you cant do much to them.

if it is standard ATX tho which Im sure it might be then mobo and cpu are the priority's along w/ video card, as long as his PSU can handle the new gear he'll prolly not need another one.
Dont know if you have a FRY's where your @ but they Have decent bare bones systems and alot of places online have them as well.

Pricewatch is a great place to , http://www.pricewatch.com/.
The first time I upgrade I didnt know not 1 thing about comps, but I wanted speed and I researched mobos, then decided what chip I wanted for what I was willing to spend , soon after I realized that RAM was gunna play an expensive factor to , oh ya my first comp WAS a Gateway therefore I needed a case to start, after all that the Radeon 64 was my first card everI bot , hehe, after my Voodoo Banshee, dam that was only like 3 years ago , n00b to comps compared to other folk here.
look at the mobo section here to learn some more bout them like what you want in them or if your just goin for speed.

Nuthin wrong with Gateway, do a search in the gallery for an early mod called Da Viper. Gateway true-dat.

For the money, your friend needs to look at AMD. Best performance v. price. I would look at an AMD 2200+ and a good 333 mobo, the combo shouldn't cost more than a couple hundred. The sound will be built in and not shabby, and that leaves money left over for some good ram. Get 512MB of Corsair XMS 3200 for $200 and you will still be under budget.

Damn son, you are full of questions. Cas doesn't matter in your friends situation. Go to www.spartantech.com and put a system together. Look at a Microstar, FIC, or Iwill board for the best price. Get the XMS 3000 or better with cas 2.5. Look around at the prices though, they fluctuate.

While you are there, mention that PimpRig is pimping them.
