Default A64 3500+ temperature

Just what exactly are normal temperatures for a Athlon 64 3500+ (939 pin Newcastle)?
I am using a stock cooler (not OCed either, I have no intention of burning this sucker up until the retail value drops a good deal) and I am getting 37-40 Celcius just idling with the case open.

When I put the processor under high load (like rendering) the temp jumps all the way up to 50 - 57 C. At first I attributed this to the crappy thermal compound the stock HSF had on it, but after reinstalling the HSF, this time with AS Ceramique, I noticed no change in temperatures.
I am using Abits monitering program "Abit EQ" to get these temperatures. I am not really sure about the accuracy of these readings, since the heatsink has not really been warm to the touch.

Are you using the OEM AMD HSF? It sucks, get a better HSF.

Congrats on having a 3500, been thinking about going 64bit on my next CAD rig.

That would indeed be the retail AMD HSF. I have just 55 C calcululating Pi to the 33 millionth digit.
EDIT: What would be a good, hopefully inexpensive replacement for the stock HSF?

You're looking about right - considering what the OEM heatsink is, and the fact a 939 has a 89watt heat output. So anyways - you definately need a new heatsink.

So, any ideas for a good, quiet Socket 939 compatable heatsink?

Zalman says the CNPS7000A-Cu, will fit 939's, but I would make sure it will work with your motherboard, you will have to see if you can find it on a compatiblity list at there website, or at Zalman

It is a local favorite here, It cool very well without killing your ears

EDIT: I see Iateronmly got there first...Nice holeshot
