| Apex Techie Wannabe | well i just slapped together a shuttle xpc, first sff for me. anyways i just noticed that a chip is actually messed up...here are my specs and what i sent to shuttle tech support. any suggestions would be much appriciated. System: ST61G4 XPC mobo FT61 p4 2.8E corsair xms pc3200 512mb 160gb hitachi SATA onboard graphics, lan, etc When looking at the XPC open cased from the left-hand side you can see a chip burned underneath the righthand corner of the heatsink, above the CMOS battery and to the right of similar chip labled: RT9203 CS5KHOL. I do not know what caused this, nor do I know how long it has been running like that. Yesterday I put the whole computer together and had immense trouble with installing Windows onto the SATA harddrive. I was never able to complete the installation. Today I opened the box to recheck my hardware configuration and noticed a bright orange light, probably from heat, coming out of the chip. The chip is physically burned and so is a small area of the motherboard around it. Is this replaceable, fixable, unimportant? | |

Are you yanking our chains? You've got an IC that's incandescent & you want to know if it's a _problem_? ![]() Turn off your PC & don't use that board again - it's a fire risk. (I hope your warranty covers a replacement, btw). The RT9203 is a power controller/regulator ... if it fails completely there's no telling what other bits of hardware it might take with it. It's probably just bad luck that you're having this problem, but I'd want to check the outputs from the PSU before using it again. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
