That kind of setup is has been used to test mobos and setups, but long time use in such an enviroment being unprotected from the elements such as being bumped and a high concentration of dust would probably lower the lifetime of your components considerably.

What is your definition of a long time?

I ran a bare mobo for about 5 months solid.

It'll be fine, just make sure not to spill anything on it and keep it clean.

Ive been runnin this compy for a year straight (almost 24/7) with no case sides. Basicly open mobo, im not sure if your talkin about bare meaning no grounding cept PSU or bare by no protection from dust.

But Ive had no probs with this one open to dust ect. for a year.

Thats a quality answer Mistelkr and whats the advantage of the cardboard box compared to a naked desk.

P.S. and thats no case at all just sitting on a table FYI.

Prolly about the protection offered by cardboard over no cardboard at all. Imagine all the possibilities...

duct tape it closed, naturally.

actually considering the idea for a moment, hell, it can't be worse then a bare desk and it may help keep some crap off it at least... hell immagine the mod-ability of a case like THAT LOL

and throw some clothes on that desk son, this is a family site

Hey - don't knock the cardboard...the first computer t EVER built was in a cardboard box!

486DX4-100, 64MB RAM *SIMMS* 2GB hard drive...custom-cut cardboard case lined with static bags, and painted gold on the outside...

Big pimpin' style circa 1993

To answer your question, it doesn't really matter...it's an old mobo anyway. Just put it on some anti-static bags, and make sure you don't give it a pepsi bath.
