| Apex Techie II | I have an Athlon XP 2800+ and when i was assembling the system it froze up during the installation of windows, when it was restarted nothing came up on the screen, I have tried multiple fixes, yet nothing, and I have swapped everythn but the CPU and MOBO out. So When I dissasembled the case i wipeed the thermal paste form the CPU and now everything around the center of the chip looks discolored. Does that mean the chhip is bad. The green light ont he Mobo still lights up though. Also, I had other ppl tell me the PSU was bad, so i am sending the CPU and MOBO back to new egg for enw ones, and am ordering a new PSU. Do u think this will solve the problem. heres a pic of CPU: ![]() Last edited by Gamingguy87; 03-July-04 at 12:36 PM.. Reason: added picture | |

| When you were installing the heastsink, did you make sure that the heat sink made proper contact with the CPU die? If not, that could be the cause of the discoloration. Next time, make sure the heat sink is properly positioned and see if the BIOS has any fail safes that allow you to have the motherboard shut down if the CPU temp reaches a dangerous level (65C+) | ||
