Default what mobo would you suggest?

system specs:
asus a7n8x-x (has to go)
athlon xp 2500 (barton)
1 g corsair xms ddr 400(2X512...yes, i know mobo doesn't do dual channel)
ati radeon 9800 pro
antec true control 550

i'm definitely going to get a new mobo. dunno if i'm going to upgrade to an amd 64 as well. HOWEVER, in the event that i DON"T upgrade my processor, what mobo would you suggest using with my current setup?

Why are you scrapping the Asus? It is a damn good board.

Anyhow, Abit Nf7-s would be my suggestion.

Shuttle AN35-N Ultra if the budget is tight (no SATA or Soundstorm audio).

have to run ram @ ddr 333 to avoid instability issues in my fav. game, and i have dual channel ram (which my mobo doesn't support...chalk that one up to the noob learning curve). if i keep the barton, i would like to get a board that allows me to use the system to max potential.
thanks for the feedback

In that case, I'll second Putwig's suggestions........depends on your budget and your expectations. Both are good boards and fill their respective niches rather well.

The Abit board is the best OCer overall and the Shuttle is the best budget OCer, generally agreed upon by all.

Edit: for Socket A mobos, that is.

most here will tell you that the ABIT NF7-S v2.0 is about the best choice when it comes to stability and overclocking, especially with a barton 2500....

i, myself have that very combination and couldnt be happier running a straight 400mhz fsb without touching the multiplier.... (2.2ghz)

Hehe, I am running the same speed (2.2GHz) on my Shuttle with an XP 2000 at only 1.65 volts and stock multiplier (sometimes up to 1.7 if I start having stability issues at the lower voltage).

when i originally built the system, i was all about overclocking. but, to tell the truth, what i really care about is being able to run Neverwinter nights with the graphics cranked, and system stability.

Then go with the Abit. I won't abandon my Shuttle, but the NF7-S Rev 2 will be my next full-use board unless something better comes along.
I have already made the decision to base my colossal project around it.

If you want my personal suggestion. You have a kick but proc, ram and GPU.

A64 technology has yet to mature fully, and major changes are on the horizon.

Get the NF7-s and save for the next generation of A64 chips.

Thumbs up

I have to say that I'm thoroughly pleased with my Soyo KT400 Dragon Ultra "Black Edition". It has many features, supports 4 slots of DDR ram at 400MHz, and has a nice AGP8x/Pro slot. I've never had a problem with this excelent mobo, and would reccomend it highly. And I can already tell some of you out there want to flame me to death for suggesting a Soyo, but please don't.

If I were to meet the CEO of Soyo face to face, I would hit him so hard that his nose would explode outward. Just my personal opinion based upon the support I received.

I won't flame you for suggesting Soyo (although I could), but I will flame you for suggesting the KT400 chipset.

Buying any socket A chipset other than NForce2 would be absolutely ludicrous at this time.

I have a Soyo KT400 Ultra PE, it run's my brothers system hot and needs 1.75V for the Vcore to run an Athlon 2100+ Palomino without stability issues.

I was going to get the Soyo Dragon KT880 Black Label, but after reading multiple posts on boards about how ****ty the BIOS is on it, I'm not going to get it.

In the last week I have been convinced Soyo sucks nuts. I will not buy a Soyo.

Instead I'm waiting for Asus and Abit to release their versions of KT880 based boards.

I also just bought an Abit AN7 to replace my brother's Soyo (I don't need anything for overclocking I picked it because it has a good layout of the connectors and will be rock solid stable at stock speeds)

Don't buy Soyo, it will bite you in t3h ass.

The AN7 is a pretty good board. A couple of us are running it and have had good luck in our OC endeavor's.

Man , why did I have to read this threwad right now ?????
I am building a comp for a nephew and was gunna give him my KT-400 that has never given me any probs, I am building this as I type !!!!! and now I read this !!!!
It never gave me probs but then again I never flashed the BIOS which killed a friend of mine Soyo and apparently BA's.
The reciver of this board knows how to turn on a comp and surf the web period.
I'm just ranting to see what you peeps have to say.....
