Unhappy Music CD- no sound??? DVD- sound OK. Whats wrong here?

Im sure that this is a motherboard issue but i cant put my finger on it!

When i put in an Audio CD, windows media player plays it but no sound at all!

Obvious things i checked are,:
- mute is off!
-4 pin audio connector is securely connected from Plextor 712A DVD player and also on mobo!
-output is via SPDIF via optical, and sound output option has been tried on analogue only, digital only, and both analogue + digital!
-When playing a DVD, the sound plays fine!

What else can i try?

If I'm reading you right, you have the sound cable plugged from your DVD drive to your mobo but not from your CD drive to your mobo? You have to have the cable plugged into the device you want to play sound, don't you?

Have you done any Windows updates lately? Last update I did, it would play any and all sound (DVD, CD, .wav, .mp3, etc.) at double-speed with no option in the menu bar to play it at normal speed. I uninstalled it, then reinstalled it and it worked fine. Don't know exactly what happened.

In addition, have you done any upgrades lately? Like installing a new drive? It sounds like you obviously know what you are talking about when you described your setup. I think that maybe Psy may have hit the nail on the head, though, if it's not a MS update.

Oh, wait, is this a burned CD? If it's burned, what format are the songs in? That might have something to do with it, also.

Let us know...

Rob

Edit: Have you tried any other media players or just the MS?

Negative - this is a thing of the past.

I dont use ANY audio cables to connect my drives and I have no sound issues - just make sure your using digital audio. The cable is only necessary for analog audio - not needed with anything resembling a modern PC.

The Plextor PX-712A is a combo DVD burner and CD burner!

so there is only 1 drive here!

If i place in a DVD, i get pics and sound, if i place an orginal audio CD i get no sound!
Previously had a HDTV tuner plugged into the same 4pin audio connection and the sound worked fine, all i did was move that 4 pin plug down to the AUX audio and connected the DVD/CD burner to the CD audio connection.

Windows media player see's it and recognises it but there is just no sound???

Havent tried any other players just yet!

And all the windows drivers are updated!

Also, FYI, all sound goes via the mobo, and is outputted via optical output to the Digital receiver.

OK, i bought a burner, but am not doing any burning at the moment!

I am talking about playing CDs and DVDs.

it can do both, and it plays DVDs fine, but playing CD appears fine but there is NO sound (it is an original CD)

That is weird. Do you have surround speakers? If you so you may have to change your sound settings from Surround to 2.1 stereo.

This looks like a software issue. Make sure you double check all your settings again. Does your cd require any codecs for the sound? Does this happen to all your cds, or just to one?

Its all being outputted via SPDIF to a Digital Yamaha Receiver!

So no changes are needed on the Receiver as it will play the audio from the DVD's, just not the CDs

Try reading this. It may shed some light on your situation hopefully.

You may also want to check Plextor's site for upgraded firmware flash files.

For some unknown reason, the MUTE was on in MediaPlayer 9???

Since i never used it before, i cant imagine why mute would be the default setting???

I use PowerDVD. I have used WinDVD in the past but uninstalled it after having a problem in which when you played a certain movie it would totally crash my system claiming hardware failure - I dont remember the exact movie but it was a B rated Van Dame movie.......although that really doesnt narrow it down. I installed PowerDVD and then it played just fine. I now use PowerDVD on all my systems and havent had a problem yet.

If you favor nVidia they have a player called nDVD I believe or something similar.
