Default Help me understand this

As most of you know I am having trouble with my PC, and have had for quite a while. I did something today that solves the problem but I want to know why it does so. I disabled internal cache on the processor(800mhz AMD Duron) and everything works great, although it runs like a 486. When I enabled it, the problems returned. Why are my video, audio problems there when its enabled but not there when its disabled. I can't run it when its disabled cuz it takes 10 minutes to load windows and 10 minutes to start up the internet, but I think I'v come across something. Did my L1 cache fail???

That will be a new one for me to hear about, but it is possible.

Do a web search, (Yahoo or Google), for a utility called CPUID.
Install it and run it. CPUID will give you all kinds of info about your system and what it's running for CPU, speeds, etc.

Enable the L1 cache and see if CPUID sees it.

Oh, and make sure that your BIOS settings have all the Shadowed settings off. They store things like your BIOS in the cache, if you disabled the L1, then you would need to check these and see what they are set at.

It is possible though that your L1 cache is hosed, enable it and see if CPUID sees it.

Default Is there one for AMD processors?

Dear IcPiper,
I read the thread about chiquita's problems where I saw your reply. That looks like a good utility to have.
Is there a similar utility for AMD?

h-oda has a host of wonderful chipset tweaking utilities at that site as well, as well as instructions for many specific chipsets and which registers do what.

the url is h-oda.com

h-oda is da man!

After implementing his tweaks for my dually athlon, my i/o throughput increased approximately 4% according to IOmeter and atto and runs more stable than ever

Not a huge boost i know, but significant

Okay I think I'v used CPUID before to overclock my K6, il give that a try. Is there a way to partially disable L1 cache? Would AS short it out because I got a little messy applying it last time I took off my heatsink and I tried cleaning it up as well as I could but there is still some there? How do you clean up artic silver off of the chip because its everywhere, the tube is too hard to push and then you push a little harder and stuff slurts out everwhere.

Sara, CPUID works for Intel and AMD chips.

Chiquita, AS is hard to get off and yes, if you got it on the exposed bridges it could cause a problem as it is electricly conductive. Use Alchohol and Q-tips to clean it up, it works fairly well.

Oh, and Sara, you got me going with you're Dear lcpiper

I am in Georgia away from my wife for a little too long and..... I should stop now before I get myself into trouble
