NForce 250 chipset, GB version is nice but stripped down version will serve you well too.

754's price sure is attractive compared to the 939s at the moment also and the 939 boards aren't matured at all....

being that im also looking into upgrading my mobo (currently got the k8vnxp with the k8t800 non-pro chipset) ive been doing a bit of research.

basically, here are your best options depending on what uses you have:
for best overclockability, the MSI K8N Neo Platinum
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...130-457&depa=0

best value: gigabyte K8NS Pro, loaded with features for a great price, decent overclockability
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...128-241&depa=0

way too many features: gigabyte K8NSNXP
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...128-245&depa=0
basically its just the K8NS pro but with a lot more features like the Dual Power System and such, but imho not worth the money.

the above 3 boards used the nforce3 250 chipset, which has gotten good reviews because of all the features, but the new via k8t800 pro also has the agp/pci lock which is basically why these new chipsets were developed lol.
in that case, theres the abit kv8 pro, which has the k8t800pro chipset and the proven quality that abit delivers.

imo, i would get either the msi(if you dont need too many ide and sata ports) or the gigabyte k8ns pro, which ill probably be getting since i have 4 hard drives and i do video editing and such(need to keep expanding). basically those are your options, i really wouldnt go with the epox or chaintec boards.

there is a good article on overclocking the MSI board at HardOCP

They got an Athlon 64 3000 up to 2.45GHZ (Equivalent to at 3500+ or better)

I bought a Chaintech 7njs Ultra thinking it had all the features to make it a good overclocking board. Too bad when ever you change anything it beeps at you and you have to reset the Bios and redo everything. And it was expensive for all the features. They don't seem to do a good job with BIOS updates either. The newest BIOS for my mobo was 9-15 last year and it didn't fix anything. Just removed a feature that was out of license. I don't think I'll buy another Chaintech. Time to go back to the A's.

My best friend has an AMD 64 3000, and he went with a gigabyte, and his overclocks beautifully, its almost all automatic, it adjust voltages and everything you can also do it manually. His setup makes mine feel like a feel like 1ghz, and I have way better RAM. I'll try and get the model #for ya.

Uhh - I have 4 SATA connectors on my MSI Neo Platinum and the standard 2 PATA. Where are you getting this "if you don't need to many IDE and SATA"?. I can run my IDE or SATA for raids 0 1 and 1+0.

Best part of the SATA intergrated into the chipset - you don't need to load extra drivers during install.

ADD - Til I can get better ram I can't really play much - but I can get to 2.5 ghz (250FSB) no problem with my MSI Neon Platinum on air cooling CPU, and passive cooled N. Bridge. This board screams, but it doesn't like Geil at ALL... I'm currently way underclocking my ram to keep stable (should have read reviews). But if you get Corsair or OCZ ram (I heard GREAT things about A-Data and this board for the budget minded)... I heard 300 FSB w/ a 8 multi is no problem.

Even though socket 939 is brand new, both the Asus and Abit 939 boards based on the K8T880 Pro look really good spec wise.
