Question CPU temp jumps to 86degrees Celcius?

Guys, I have been building a new machine and loading software and components over the past couple of days.

Temps have been around 30-36 degrees celcius, then right now, all of a sudden a temp 50 degree spike up to 86???

All i was doing was disk cleanups then defrags!!!

When I heared the temp alarm, i shut down the PC immediately!

What would cause that???? And did i do the right thing?

Thumbs up

i waited a few minutes then rebooted and temps are back to 33 degrees celcius!

It appears to be a false temp spike, but i dont know for sure!

Any ideas? Im using the Asus AI monitoring software.

Ive never used the Aus program but I know with abiteq the temps are usually about 10 degrees higher then they really are. You can use motherboard monitor which gives you a more accurate reading or you can use a thermal probe. You can get motherboard monitor here.

i use MBProbe for all my monitoring, and i notice that if i run it in tandem with other monitoring apps, that my temps, fan speeds, voltages and other relevant info get skewed or jumpy or all out ridiculous, so in light of this, i would just write yout problem off to a monitor probe anomaly (sounds painful)...

In the event of a true temp increase to alarming levels, what is the suggested course of action?

If i shut down then the CPU will not get any further cooling as the CPU fan would be shut off also!

If i leave it running then, i risk damaging the CPU???

What is best?

i would make sure you arent running applications that might try to access the BIOS in the same manner, at the same time....

i forgot to look at your system specs, but if you are running an intel system, i wouldnt worry TOO much about it, since intel (newer) cpus seem to not only handle the heat pretty well, but step themselves down automatically to save themselves....

if its AMD, you will need to check your BIOS for a cpu thermal protection that will give you a hardware level alert if things get too spicy, or all out shut the system down, either way, im pretty sure its your monitoring software so even with cpu thermal protection on, it may very well register insane temps but the computer not shut down on its own...
