The celeron line is Intel's way of getting rid of the crap-crop. As in, whatever then-current processor does not pass testing, is sent to the celeron stockpile where it is downclocked and L2-choked until it runs stable. Really.

Make your own decisions but if you want a cheap performer, the 1700+ is the chip to get.

You won't go far wrong if you think of a Celeron as an emasculated P2 or P3, depending on the speed.
