Default Sudden freeze

Hi. I've built a PC for my bro, but I'm having problems diagnosing a fault where the machine suddenly freezes during gameplay, requiring a reboot. The spec is:

AMD Athlon Barton XP 2800
Coolermaster Aero 7+
ASUS A7N8X Deluxe m/b
512Mb Corsair XMS 3200 DDR
120Gb SATA HDD
ATi Radeon 9800 Pro 256Mb (Sapphire branded)

I've just resolved another issue where the PC would cut out completely. This was due to the heatsink not resting evenly on the CPU core. I stuck on a copper shim and applied Arctic Silver 5 and that has done the trick. The problem that faces me now doesn't appear to be heat related, although I could be wrong.

The Games we've tested so far are Jedi Outcast and an X2 rolling demo and in both cases the screen freezes, but doesn't immediately shut off as before. Before it freezes, the screen flashes periodically. As far as I know, I've applied the latest ATi drivers. Don't know where to go from here. Can anybody help?

Thanks in advance,

Steve (loztech)

Let me ask you this.........If your running Windows XP, do you have a 1394 connection and if you do and are not using that connect currently, disable it. I doubled my frame rates just doing that.

If I recall, my brother tried jumping back a few versions of the Catalyst drivers to fix the first problem, so they're probably not the latest. And yes, the alternate ethernet connection is enabled, but I just labeled it as spare. I'll try these fixes tonight. Cheers guys!
