If it's got power going to it, then yes it could still generate heat and not work.

Can you perhaps give a bit more info? Slay answered your question as is was asked. Some pertinant information might be the type of CPU, error messages ...

Unless you are just settling a bet.

sorry it was a very helpful response
and appreciated

I was just being weird - because the forum wouldn't let me enter 'thanks' because it was too short

ok
one moody day my screen froze & my computer became unresponsive. I did a forced shut down - but then it would not reboot. Fan's kick in but no beep from my asus a7n8x-x motherboard. I had 3 ram sticks inside and tried each one separately. So I thought my motherboard must have died.

A year later I felt ready to resurrect this computer - there is someone in great need of it - so I went on Ebay and bought a new motherboard. Hooked it up and it reacted exactly the same way. I shouted many obscenities.

So now I'm testing my luck that it is the processor.

The green light & whirling cpu fan lead me to believe that the psu is not at fault

it is possibly a partial psu failure though.it is actually the more likely of the two since the pc froze rather than dying outright.

Well you can get a green light and fan movement and still have a bad power supply. All that stuff will appear to work at less than 12v. And the 12v lines could be good, it may be the 3.3v or 5v lines that have died. I would try swapping the power supply out 1st.

thanks for the information

the cpu is on its way (had already ordered it on ebay) so i'll try that first.
I don't have an extra psu to test - but good to know that should be next.

wish I had tried it first - before buying the MB & CPU

Also wanted to mention that when I removed the heatsink last week - the cpu (chip??) was shiny & bare.
The thermal pad had melted away from it. The top of the chip itself was clean. I'm not sure if that is normal

The TIM shouldn't have melted away, and you say the chip itself was shinny. Did you buy it second hand or something, cause it sounds like it was lapped. How long did you have it before it "craped" out. Technically you can go without TIM if your Heatsink and chip are very well lapped, although i would strongly caution against that.

That's an impressive video ... would like to have seen the CPU temp BIOS screen again when he pulled the HSF away from the CPU.

Thanks, i found it when i was doing a lot of research on lapping, and what kind of heatsink to get for my brothers computer. When i saw his post about no tim and a shiny chip, this just jumped in my head as an example.

thanks - I had the computer working for about 3 years - assembled at the local computer store.
It was an athlon xp 2700+

There were remnants of the square thermal pad on the heat sink - but it was bare in the centre as well as nothing showing on the surface of the chip.

The whole day seemed like it was leading up to a large thunderstorm - but it ended in silence. Then I got a call from someone nearby reporting they had the storm - and their power was knocked out.

I didn't experience any lightning but that is when my computer quit.

That depends on the PSU. Make / model / serial number / watts?

Send back the CPU if you can. Could also be the mobo, right?

Here's a thought -- is that local store you bought this from still around? If so, bring your rig in and see if they can test the various parts, with the agreement that you'll purchase the appropriate replacement from them. Otherwise they'll probably charge you labor, which can be expensive.

yes I tried the a new MB (jetway - replica of the asus a7n8x-x) paid $50 with shipping

the cpu was used from a ebay power seller $25 in total - wouldn't be able to send it back

This is what happens when I get started on something.
Glad i'm not at a casino right now

Couldn't really swing that deal with my store.
It took them two months to get it working properly the first time.
Although its been 3 years I still find it hard to go in there

if the mobo dosn't need the aux p4 connector an old 250 watt psu will push it.
lightning strikes hit utility poles all the time.it may have caused a surge and took the psu out.
