Default D875PBZ wont post? it did mins ago...

i have this weird problem. most of the parts of a gateway 710XL was given to me by a friend (including 2 250gb sata drives ). so i tried hooking up the motherboard, processor, cd drive hard drive memory on my table, and it powered up, but no video. a couple of trys got it to display. so i turned it off and went off to do something else, and came back to give the mobo my full attention. i turned it on but this time no matter what i did it wouldnt post. i tried disconnecting everything cept the video card and ram, still no luck. so i even tried using a different video card, hard drive, power supply, memory, even processor. still no luck. i know the board isnt fried or anything because it still tries to read from floppy drives and the hard drive access light blinks. also when i remove all the ram the no ram buzzer comes on. i tried resetting the bios by removing the battery for 10 mins. and still no luck. i noticed that when the motherboard was ready to post, the CPU fan would die down a little. but it doesnt do that anymore. i tried flashing a new bios, but when i stick a floppy in it tries to read it, the buzzer beeps 5 times, then tried to read again, and buzzes another 5 times, in a endless loop. i feel that i really tried everything that i can, but im not ready to believe that its fried, as i know absolutely nothing happened to it physically (shorted out etc) and it was working just minutes ago. anyone have any idea?

also as any bios related thing goes, im not sure if the mobo is a gateway branded intel board, or a oem board.

The D875PBZ is an Intel socket 478 motherboard. I know this because it's what I've run on solidly for the past 5 years.

The user manual for this mobo can be found here: ftp://download.intel.com/support/mot...bz_English.pdf

The five-beeps signal indicates a processor failure.

As for the rest of it, I've had an instance or two when my mobo didn't post, but it was due to a failing PSU. As you've tried a different PSU, I'm thinking that's not the case for you.

Also note, now that the mobo is five years old, it's starting to show signs of dying. It's reporting inconsistencies in voltage for various areas, yet I'm certain the PSU is solid, and these errors were occurring prior to purchasing a new PC Power and Cooling PSU.

let me know if you discover anything else.

i know its not the processors, as i tried 3 different processors that worked in a different setup before and after. maybe the closest thing to processor failure can be the socket, the first time i put the processor it didnt sound right. also that it happens every time it tries to read from the floppy, that just seems weird.

Well. If *all* those parts you're using are all working in different motherboards, but this one won't post, I got bad news for you: the mobo's dead.

Doesn't matter if it was working 12 hours ago, it ain't working now; and nothing you're doing properly, with known-good parts, is making it work. So ... you may need to suck it up and toss the board.

Or, before doing that, see if there's a local shop you can bring it to and have them test it. Otherwise, it's just a silicon paperweight, and not a very good one.

Maybe check the socket-- I'd expect if the socket was not making good contact, it could resemble a bad CPU?

well, i think ill just ditch the board, but the processor i got with the board was a real gem i guess. its a 3.4ghz and ive read somewhere its been o/c'ed to 4.2 stable, 4.7 max. the intel board might just be holding it back with its incapability of o/cing. got all this stuff for free, so really cant be complaining. thanks though guys.

As a long-term user of that board, I can confirm that OC'ing the D875PBZ is not an option. Mine didn't like even a 1% jump in any direction, either through manual usage or the application they made (can't remember the name, but I had it installed for a while) to control OCs from the desktop. That board just won't budge. Some folks have had very minor success, but it wasn't made to be an OC board, it was made for stable, reliable performance -- which, for me, it has been.

So, final thought: have you reset the BIOS using Jumper5 on the board? Give that a shot. Unplug the PSU from the board, set the J5 to Clear and keep it there for about 10 seconds. Then set it back, and re-attach the PSU.

If that doesn't work ... I got nothing for ya.

ps -- Hak Foo had a great suggestion: make sure no dust particles got into the socket, or even into the pins on your chip. I've had a piece of lint (literally, a single strand of tiny fiber) make a system inoperable until I was able to identify the problem (PITA) and remove it.

i tried blowing some air though the socket, didnt seem to do the trick. unless theres some way to take apart the slot? and godling, what jumper are you talking about? theres only 1 jumper on the board, the bios config jumper, and its not a reset jumper, its just to get into the bios or do a recovery flash. cant find anything labeled J5. i do have a diag led on the board, it flashes 2 times. anyone know any info on the diag light? cant find anything on intels site.

Write that down to a bad memory error in my brain ... I was thinking of an older board I had, way back in the day. Don't even know how that resurfaced.

I don't seem to have any additional help for you, sorry.
