Default asking for Drivers for USB devices ? Why

Merry Xmas!

Each time i change my USB devices (pretty much anyt of them) from port to port (all on the mobo) it asks me to load the drivers again for each new port that its moved to.

How can i eliminate this problem?

Please give info on what USB devices you are referencing, what your OS is and what version, and what kind of hardware you are running. Doing online troubleshooting is even more difficult than telephone troubleshooting.

Things such as Gyration Mini k/b and mouse, as well as USB Video devices.

This is on a Asus p4P800 e-Deluxe mobo

An initial assessment is that you don't have the motherboard USB drivers installed correctly. Are there any Yellow or Red marks when you look in device manager?

In my experiance the drivers will load for each port, but it should stop once all the ports have been swaped around. IE if you go back to a port allready used for said device the drivers should be installed. If they are not that would be a problem.

Not trying to be an ass, but I have to ask myself WHY you are moving USB devices around in the first place?

If you were using a laptop, I could understand, but even then I usually use the same USB port for my mouse (left side upper), Ultra Multimedia card reader/USB multi-port (review coming soon) (left side lower), and my flash drives(any of the 4 on the right side).

My suggestion would be to find what works best where and stick with that setup. Mouse here, keyboard there, flash drives in this one, external device in that one, and be done with it.

No problem asking the Q, Its only happening because my MTPC has to be pulled out of the stand and placed back in, so i am always feeling my way for the USB ports.

All good points, but if you move your system, say for LAN parties, this problem comes up quite a bit. Not mention al the dam cables look alike, prolly label them to stick with a common set up as GPN suggests.

Another ding on Vista for this USB driver issue, is a known "lock out/BSOD" issue when swapping usb ports before reboot. The recommended procedure is to shut down properly and then reboot, not restart and shutoff power. The RC1 cannidate though seems to have addressed this issue so far.

That's kind of a new one on me, Lokie... I usually don't have an issue with that sort of thing...

I "Safely Remove" my flash / hard drives before I power down to come to work, never had a Vista BSOD over USB devices (knock on wood)
