P3 abit se6 IDE problem

i received a old PIII system from a friend, turned out the mobo was a SE6 by abit. so i decided i would put together a PIII system for a friend or my dad. but for some reason it wont pick up any cd drives, and it also wont pick up anything thats a slave. if i connect a hard drive as master on IDE1, it reads, but if i set it to slave it doesn't. same for IDE2. but if i connect a cd drive, it wont read at all on any of the ide ports, slave or master. anyone have any idea whats going on here? i know i have jumper settings on the drives right. maybe its a mobo jumper or bios setting? im not sure if the bios is the most recent one, it says its V6.00. or maybe its because im using 80 wire ide cables?

anyone? im pretty sure its something really simple im missing, but its just not hitting right
