Unhappy AMD 2400+ processor will not run at designated speed

my AMD 2400+ processor is only able to run at 1.49 Ghz. I've gone to the BIOS and i've fiddled with the CPU speed, memory speed and FSB ratios and nothing works. whenever i try to raise the speed a bit, my machine boots up to Windows (XP Home) and after about 5-10 minutes of use or idleness, it instantly restarts itself without warning. i dont think its a problem with Wattage or current, cause i have a 500-Watt power supply, and its probably not a heat issue either (ive been monitoring it and its running relatively cool). its currently at 100Mhz for the CPU speed and 166Mhz for memory. the processor is designed for 266Mhz, but 133 Mhz makes it unstable as i described, and 166 and 200Mhz causes it to fail to boot at all. is there anything i can do?

What motherboard is it?

Quite simply you have your fsb set to 100 instead of 133.

You are running:

15 x 100 = 1500

Instead of:

15 x 133 = 2000 (correct speed)

I understand you have tried other settings without success, I suspect your board has a jumper that must limit fsb to 100.

Mobo specs would help alot.

well, its a MSI K7N2 Delta-L nForce2 motherboard @ 400 Mhz FSB, or so it says. like i said, ive already tried setting the speed up from 100 to 133 in bios, and the jumper is already set to 133 on the board, so thats not the problem. i dont think this is an incompatibility issue or anything, i just think my ratios for the FSB and mem might be off, i dont know. my mem should be compatible (333Mhz). thx for the reply.

again, just make sure do these in order:
1.) SHUT DOWN
2.) Make sure CPU jumper is set to 133 or if it has an auto setting set it there
3.) Clear CMOS/BIOS
4.) Restart PC
5.) Go into BIOS, making sure it says 133. memory should be AT LEAST 266
6.) Save and exit BIOS/restart.

this should get you at 2400 speeds. if not there may be a problem with your CPU

Ref the RESTARTING issue...

Right click on MY COMPUTER icon, select PROPERTIES. Go to ADVANCED tab and go to Startup and Recovery box and left click on settings. In the window that pops up, UNCHECK the AUTOMATICALLY RESTART option.

If its a newer Motherboard, there is a extra power connector (called a P-4 connector in your manual) that if not hooked up, may limit clock speeds.

Just something else to check

Actually Lokie, many of the newer AMD boards have a "P4" auxillary connector ........ I guess we will have to quit calling it the "P4 connector".

The NF7-S for example has an auxillary power plug.

I have a similar board. MSI K72G-L. It does have that 4 pin 12V connector on it. There are two jumpers on that board. J10 and J11. From the manual;

FSB Mode Jumper: J10
This Jumper allows you to set the CPU FSB

User mode (default) 133mhz is pins 1 & 2 shorted
Safe mode is pins 2 & 3 shorted

CPU FSB Frequency Jumper: J11
This jumper is used to specify the CPU FSB frequency. Leave the jumper short connected if a 133/166 FSB CPU is installed. If the CPU supports 100mhz FSB, leave the jumper open connected

Pretty self explainitory. I dont know if you have the exact same mobo as me, hope that helps.

Try leaving all the FSB and memory in BIOS to auto. same as the voltage and such. See if that works.

Default thanks...

thanks for the replies, but i still cant get this machine to work I've decided to just be happy with 1.49Ghz...BTW, I was using DDR 333Mhz OEM, perhaps that had something to do with it. I'd go out and get some DDR 400 and try my luck, but i just got a new mobo & cpu (P4 @ 3.0Ghz), and i must have put the mobo in incorrectly or something, cause I shorted it out yesterday and my northbridge chip literally exploded! i figure the case must have been touching the m/b or something...luckily my return policy covered it now my room smells like sulfur and smoke...but it did anyway b4 lol.

Do not be happy with yor settings.. If you still can not get it to work no matter what you do you need to either rma the mobo or the cpu and see if the replacement will fix it..

EDIT:: Check your jumpers once again and make sure that both powerconnectors are connected.. Reset the bios.. Find an updated bios and flash it..and if you still can not fix the problem you need to rma it..
