Default Want to upgrade 1gb of xms3200xl to 2gb...

Hi all.

My current system is running good with 1GB of Corsair xms3200xl, the 2225 stuff, tho I run the timings looser than that for stable overclock.

Now this stuff is officially discontinued and whilst it can still be found on newegg for a good price, in the UK it's really a dying breed

There is some on auction atm on ebay and there is some from ONE retailer tho it will cost too much to get 1gb from there, so I might be able to get some from newegg.

Can I add another 1GB of the same memory to my system without probs? What issues might I encounter?
For instance can I still maintain my modest 500mhz overclock and timings or is the system actually gonna slow down a bit instead as I have read can happen with 2gb of RAM.

And would it be a total no-go to add 1gb of crucial ballistix 2226 cos thats £86 for 1GB which is cheaper than the £200 I paid a couple of yrs ago for the xms!

Cheers any help appreciated,

syn

Those are a 2x512M set. if you add another 2x512M set you
will only be able to run 2T.
If you add a 1G stick I'm sure something would change.

If every thing you run, apps and games, run fine then save up until you can get 2x1G sticks.
Then when the resource hogging games do hit the market or you want to up grade
to M$ Vista you will be able to do it on 2G with no problems. You may have to tweak the bios again though.

OH $SOLID$Necro, or several of the OC gurus around will
be able to assist you better for a more detailed explination.

Thanks for the quick response Pharaoh

'Saving up' sadly is not an option for me as i'm a student with no ability to work while doing my course. In fact I can only earn negative money atm lol

So I thought sub £100 for the only upgrade I can currently do short of a total system overhaul (PCI-E, core2, DDR2/3) is good value. (Having said that we got the 7800GS+ AGP's here in the uk with 24 pipes, alas £234 ~ $400!)

Yes my PC runs OK and I really should FORMAT now but you know I cba, not that this extra gig of ram is cos of that. Hardcore games like oblivion, battlefield 2142, doom3 and F.E.A.R might like the 2gb better? Would be nice to have general performance boost in windows if 2gb can offer that, i'm just bored and frustrated by all the new technology I won't be able to afford for years Makes me sad

I firmly believe that if you wanna be on the forefront of gaming you need a high end pc, consoles have their place tho just seems gaming of the future is getting cheaper and more expensive at the same time! Its real confusing.

Dude thats why you're a student, so in the future you can afford to have the things you want. Stick with it

As for the games, yeah, Battlefield 2142, F.E.A.R and others will love 2Gb if you can get the money together.

Got this reply from the RAM GUY on corsair's forums:

We do not recommend mixing and matching any modules together as it can cause many problems. My suggestion would be to add only what you currently have in your system to the exact part number. Sorry about that.

If the modules on ebay are the same exact part it should work.

Does that mean its OK to buy the stuff on ebay if its xms3200xl? Or does he mean I need to match chip numbers and other voodoo stuff?!

Yeah, I agree. Company Of Heroes runs much smoother on my machine after my recent upgrade, and just generally, system performance is better. Oh, and Alt-tabbing out of games is once again possible, haven't been able to do that without watching my nails grow 3 centimetres every time in a few years...

xms3200xl = xms3200xl in theory.

Yes if you buy the ebay product and it matches your corsair part number it will do what you seek.

Got the memory in the post the other day the sticks were v1.2 and my existing stuff was rev v1.1 but it all works fine
I tested it alone first with prime95 all the way up to my 3.3 OC then added my ram and after adjusting timings everything is fine.
So i've noticed that hl2 is running LOADS better as in everything on high 1280x1024, x2 AA and x4 Anisotropic 180 FPS peaks to lows of 50FPS. Before I had to lower an odd setting and no way would ever think about running with antialiasing.
UT 2k4 has taken a shine to it too, gameplay is much more fluid and I can run on max everything and its 100FPS and 35 FPS in bad firefights.
Quitting games to the desktop is instantaneous now, no more waiting for DOOM3 to stop 'crunching' the system.
Overall happy that ram works and overclocked fine, I should really format I think the ram is helping a battered OS system and can't wait for new-install performance
