Default EPP: The next step in Memory evolution!

What is EPP?

Quote:
Developed as an extension to the traditional Serial Presence Detect (SPD) found on today's high performance DIMMS, Enhanced Performance Profiles allow memory manufacturers to integrate additional module performance data in the unused portion of the JEDEC standard SPD, allowing compatible motherboards to read and take advantage of added performance capabilities. EPP brings simplified overclocking success for entry level enthusiasts, and access to more advanced memory specifications and a higher recovery point for hard-core overclockers. To take full advantage of the Enhanced Performance Profiles, motherboards designed with a special BIOS can recognize the presence of EPP settings. Once these settings are enabled, the system boots directly into the memory's specified settings and takes immediate advantage of the increased performance.

Now I remember OCZ previewed something very similar last year for DDR-1 at a trade show, but in never materialized.. I am glad to see this idea finally hitting the market!

As a side note, It may take some of the fun out of it for some, but it will make life easier for the novice, the memory section is easily the most complex part of the Bios, and is getting worse all the time...Anadtech finally found a board with too many options for there taste!

Tom's hardware of course had some "Less than kind" words about this and a few other new features, they always seem to take a dig at AMD whenever they can, at least now they try hard not too look like they are...

They did bring up an intresting "Bug" with the memory dividers that is worth a close look though if you are considering an upgrade, looks like you might want to stear clear of the new 4200+, 4400+ and 5000+ for the time being.
No no mention was ever made of the upcoming Conroe killer chip, the 65NM Quad core K-8L that will truely make this platform shine!

Good move on nVidias part. AMD just might win the memory bandwidth award with this...too bad it won't really help too much in beating Intel where it really matters: Benchmarking.
