The new RAM you buy will only run at 266mhz tho, if I am not mistaken.

Nope, doesn't matter what slots. All the ram will run at the slowest speed.

It will not matter what 'slot' you put them in, speed wise they will still run at the speed of your slowest stick.

In my opinion, the max frame rates never truly matter...it's the average that counts. Even if you lost a few FPS in source, everything else sped up around it, and that is what truly matters.

The small frame rate drop might be the result of loosened RAM timings. What are the specs of the RAM you got? From the slowdown, i'm guessing they have 3-4-4-8 timings. The best performing RAM for 2x512 nowadays is 2-2-2-5, and this will probably regain those lost frames, and maybe even add a couple more.

RAM will often run at higher speeds and tighter timing than what they are rated for, I can get some old kingston DDR266 to run DDR400 with loose timings (Cas 3-3-3-8, 2.5-3-3-7 is stock)

Alternatively, I can run them much tighter than stock at DDR266 speeds (CAS 2-3-3-6)

I would bet you could get all 4 sticks to run at DDR333 speeds or more with around 2.8v
