While 4GB would be best (theoretically), 2GB would be your best bet. First off, Windows XP can't even use all 4GB. Second, running 4 RAM sticks puts a big strain on the memory controller, which causes the RAM timings to loosen up, reducing pure performance. 2GB would be a lot better since you can get 2x1GB sticks and run 1T command timing.

About the strain on the mem controller, does that go for any 4 sticks? Or just higher "density" ones?

You will unfortunately get the same problem with any 4 sticks.

I don't know the exact reason, but only server class operating systems such MS Server 2003 etc. support large amounts of RAM... I guess because Bill didn't think people running WinXP would ever need 4Gb, so it isn't natively supported.

I imagine Vista will support larger amounts of RAM, but at the moment, if you wanna use all 4Gb, go for a server class OS.

However, as Ator said, you would be better off with 2Gb at the moment. No game makes use of 4Gb, coupled with the strain on the mem controller, you'd actually be getting worse performance from 4Gb than 2Gb.

That would be any 2 sided sticks of ram. You can run 4 1 sided with no slowdown but kinda hard to find 1 gig sticks that are not duel sided Dimms.
