Default mhz headroom? pc6400 vs. pc8000+ for oc

so one of my sticks of corsair plain xms pc6400 died on me. it will boot with one stick but not the other. probably from pushing my e6300 to 3.2 ghz in a pc that is pretty much on 24/7 for the last 6+ months with low speed fans. which leaves me looking for new ram.

will my OC luck and lifespan fair better if i buy ram faster than pc6400? like pc8000 or pc8500? or will it just be a waste of money? i've been looking into getting the corsair dominator 2 gig pairs or some of the mushkin kits. i'd like to keep it under $200.

btw, this thing is so sloooow with only 512 megs of ram

Go for Crucial Ballistixs DDR2-800 or DDR-1066. The DDR2-1066s over clock great, they use high binned D9s, mine will run DDR2-1300 SuperPi32M stable @ 2.35v at stock timings

I have the Dominator PC8500, and it's only worth it if you're running it 1:1, 1066FSB:1066mhz RAM. I overclocked to 3.6ghz, 1600FSB, I run the RAM in 1:1 (800:1600). When I OC to 3.2ghz I drop the multi to 8x and push 1600FSB through it still. I've never had an overclocking experience where I ran the RAM at more than 800mhz whilst overclocked. Well actually, 825mhz for 3.3ghz with 1650FSB but yeah, any good PC6400 should do that anyway, and with CL3 timings, not CL4 as I'm getting with these modules at best.

For overclocking on Core 2s? I'd stick with some really tight timing 800mhz RAM if you're looking to keep a 1:1 ratio, and save yourself some money.

If you're happy to run unlinked and just let the mhz fly, then by all means buy some PC8000+ sticks for e-penis length adjustments.

Ballistix for the win... Any of there stuff clocks nicely. The 1066MHz is sort of the best DDR2 choice at the moment. It's all about DDR3 now though, hopefully I'll be able to move soon.

You're better off running the memory as fast as possible because Core 2's love as much bandwidth as you can give them. 1:1 is no longer very important.

Crucial 800mhz stuff will run at 1.2ghz, but if you can afford it I'd get faster sticks to guarantee a good overclock.

Bandwidth for the win... I'm running my memory (Cheap Micron Orginal with D9GKX chips on!) at 1124MHz (450MHz FSB 4:5 divider) 4-4-4-12 2.3v 24/7 and it performs great, Sandra and Everest Scores are very nice.
