Default Guide: PSU Connectors Reference

PSU Connectors Reference, rev 1

Disclaimer: Use this guide at your own risk. pcApex and/or I cannot be held liable if you damage your power supply and/or other components by following this guide. I went to great lengths to ensure the accuracy of this reference, but to err is human. Double-check this reference with your manufacturer's specs to ensure the best level of accuracy.

Notes:
  • Connectors shown are viewed from the end pins, with the clip facing up.
  • Each ATX pin slot is either square or square with one octagonal side. Note the difference to ensure proper orientation.
  • Each connector shown includes a colored block, circle, or dot with wire colors used by a majority of manufacturers. Your wire colors may vary, especially for unique connections such as -12V, -5V, etc.
  • The wire is almost always two wires into one pin, a +3.3V orange and +3.3V sensing brown wire.
  • Other dual-color pin symbols are wires of the first color shown, with stripes of the second color shown.
  • Connectors are shown as a symbolic reference -- they are not to scale.
  • It is a myth that the black wires (common grounds) are different for each wire. There is no "12V ground" or "5V ground". All COM black wires connect to the same ground inside a PSU.
  • Scroll to the bottom of this reference for a legend describing the pin abbreviations.

(Note: 24-pin ATX connector no longer supplies a -5V lead since newer mobos don't use it. If your mobo
is pre-2001, it may require the -5V lead that the 24-pin connector no longer supplies.
Many PSUs sold
with a 24-pin connector have a detachable right-side 4-pin section to be 20-pin compatible.)

..COM = common ground
..PS_ON# = power supply on (soft switch)
..PW_ON = power on notification
..+5VSB = +5 volts supplied for stand-by mode
..3.3VS = +3.3 volts sensing
..FANM = psu fan monitoring sensor
..FANC = psu fan voltage controller
..1394R/V = IEEE 1394 (Firewire) power signals
..SIG = signal returned from a fan which is useful in determining fan speed

If you feel I left something out or you found an error, please post about it so I can make the corrections. Gotta love unicode, Courier New font, and pcApex's awesome message editor with a WYSIWYG mode. Many thanks to pcApex, Glitterkill, and others who've helped.

Enjoy.

Very nice! probably took ages to do all the nice txt images.

Will you include the 6 pin PCI-e in rev 1?

Ooops! Looks like I forgot about that connector. It will most definitely be there in the next rev. Thanks for the comments.

Thanks for the rep and support.

I hope it will be a worthwhile reference to someone doing a sleeving job who forgets to label their wires. I will edit it and add the forgotten ATX 6-pin connection now. Thanks again guys!

Edit: rev 1 is done. Let me know if you find any errors. Thanks!

I second the sticky suggestion. This will most definately come in handy for my next sleeve job. It is a pain to label all the wires.
