Default Easy Window Etches

Hiya all,

I just finished a simple window etch on my pc. take a look at the attachment below.

This is what I did (and you can do) to get a very effective etching on plexiglass for simple to fairly complex etchings:

First: I masked off a large portion of the window using regular good 'ol masking tape. I then traced on a pattern (in this case, the amd logo) with a pencil.

Once I had the desired design, I cut out what I wanted etched with an exacto, leaving the rest of the masking tape on as not to accidentally etch something I didn't originally want to.

With everything masked, cut out and ready to go, I used 600 grit sandpaper to start and began "etching" the window. You can use heavier grit papers, but be careful not to gouge too deep into the plexiglass. As you cover the entire etched surface, you can work your way up to lighter grits to get a nice smooth surface. This helps remove large scratches and makes the etching look continuous.

Once you're finished sanding, there will be a small "unetched" line around your entire etching. You can use a small piece of sandpaper to get into these small areas. Once you are completely done, remove the tape and wipe down with a damp cloth.

I found this to be a remarkably easy and fast way to etch a window yourself. (depending on the desired effect) I did not have to tools, materials, or money to get the window professionally etched. So I came up with this simple solution. Take a look at mine and see what you think.

I think I recommended something like this to someone in a thread earlier in the week. Did you read that there? Also, I recommended trying to use a grinding bit for the dremel to "fill in" large areas. If you got the cylindrical bit that came with the dremel that should do nicely, and it would be even better if you had the flexshaft attachment
