Default How to rig up a CCFL from an old scanner...

Ok guys, I finaly did it. I had an old scanner that someone gave me. And I heard you could use the Cold Cathode from it... So I did and it works(it is FREAKIN bright)

So here are the parts and tools...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...0Tut/Tools.jpg

Ok pretty much all you need is a soldering gun, some electrical solder, a molex conector(I stole one off an old fan I didn't use), adn the CC and inverter that was in the scanner. Also not listed in that pic but my dad suggested after I took the pic, is Brushon Electrical tape. Its some pretty sweet stuff to brush on over your open wires or the inverter.

Here is the pic of it soldered together, its kinda sh!ty quality. But you get the idea...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/Soldered.jpg

And here it is all "taped up"

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...rushonTape.jpg

Ok the inverter was in the scanner WILL shock you if it is not covered up. So I just brushed on some of that liquid electrical tape. You could use normal tape, or make a little box for it. Just KEEP IT COVERED. It doesn't hurt that bad, but if your not ready for the jolt you may drop whats in your hands, in shock.

Ok here's teh finished product all lit up in a lit up room...

And here it is in the dark....

Anyhoo have fun...

NOTE:
I am not responsible if you do this and the thing blows up or somehting and burns the house down... OR WORSE... DESTROYS YOUR PC!!! AHHHHH... OK maybe the house thing would be worse

Thats a great writeup - short and sweet, and the end result is good looking, and nice and bright. The 12V is exactly what the CCFL needs I take it? You got bling ...now wheres that scanner *picks up hammer*

The scanner is ontop of my bed... And i am thinking of using the window from i for a mod. Of maybe even modding an old PC into the thing. It is a fairly large scanner(OLD SCHOOL) So I could fit the stuff in there, but only if the Mobo had onboard EVERYTHING. Cause its not tall enough to fit PCI or AGP cards.

Pretty sweet idea. The cool thing about using the light like that, is that if you get bored you could change it. Possibly using different colored gels. The plastic sheets that are used over lights in the theater or when something is filmed for TV or a movie. You could do a different color all the time. No getting bored with it.

Uhhhmm, I have a problem lol. I tried to do this, but I have no clue what to solder. I have the cathode outside of the scanner, it is un-attachted to anything, and I dont know what to do from here...maybe tell us more info pls lol.

Heya KrhaK. Can you send me a pic of your CC? Cause I though i gave pretty explicite(sc) on how and what to solder together... And it maybe that your CCFL is wired differently then mine. I cant tell you until I see yours.
Thanks for trying and welcome to Pimprig!!!

Shikaku

BTW I am not that experianced at soldering or electrical stuff. I just noticed that my old unusable scanner had a CC in it, so I though I would try modding it so it would run off my PC's Power Supply... And it DID. But I am not really the one to ask about trouble shooting this stuff. So post a Pic of your CCFL and I or someone else here will try to help ya out
