Default New Mod: Case Grinding Effects

This idea came about from "Brushed Metal" and "Ground Metal painting" effects with angle grinders on chopper tanks w/ translucent candy clearcoats.

Large cutting wheel = Long lines
Used smaller wheels = tight curves
Ball grinder = shading or filling
Arrowhead = fine lines, points

I grinded parallel lines in surface of Kingwin's 424 alum bezel with rotary cutting disc. They really accented the flame cut-outs nicely.

You can apply as much pressure as you desire. I went deep!

Clean the surface w/ Laquer thinner, then apply no more than 2 coats of Duplicolor Metalcast Red, then 3 -4 coats of Polyurethane clear. Check out the translucent effect 8)

"What would Von Dutch do if he used a Dremel?"

I engraved these repeating designs into 5.25 faces to really accent the bezel.

They came off Manical, like they were carved by a Demon's finger nail. Thats the theme I'm going for 8)

How about engraving your case w/ your signature or title of case.

Bill, have you ever tried doing the reptilian-scale look where you take a grinding wheel to the metal. I'm not sure exactly what it's called, but I've seen even casual attempts of this technique turn out really cool. Basically all you do is Take a grinding wheel... maybe a 4" for a computer case and place it flat down on one part of the case. You then pick it up, move it over an inch, put it down. You then do this all over the case keeping the centerpoints evenly spaced. It gives a really awesome effect. I don't have any raw metal to try it on though.

add: I really like the little tutorial and effect you got in yours. Keep them coming if you keep having ideas.

That sounds bitchin. As soon as I can score some more kingwins I'll pull out the angle grinder and experiment with other effects and post them here. The options are limitless really

In direct light, this effect is really cool

Looks cool. I think the effect that Microsoftman is talking about is done with sanding disk or a wire wheel that the wires stick out the end that looks something like the photoshoped example below. I done it in like a minute so, ya know.

BTW: Is this case called "Hell Bound" ? I done a case called Hell Bound Here---> http://gallery.pcapex.com/showphoto....cat=all&page=1

Wow thats pretty sweet! I think it adds alot of depth to the flames, makes them look alot more 3-D.

No big deal. Its not my case, so im not worried about it. I dont think the actual owner would care anyway, hes not really into the mod scene, he just wanted a cool looking case.

I have some better pics of it somewhere that show all the detail of the flames and all the little skulls and bones and such at the base of them.

Great effect, Bill. I love how the light catches the scratches and almost makes it look like flames. Very original, very easy. I think you may see some members trying some of that action on their own cases. The bay cover thing is something I may do myself.

I think Luna is probably right about the equipment used, but I know that a grinding disk will work too because a friend of mine at school did a half-assed attempt at it with a grinder. About the PS example, the only thing missing is the cool part where the different circles overlap and create a scale patten... it's the coolest metal effect i've ever seen.

Looks cool. I did that on my case when I first started working on it a long time ago.

I like how you ran the flames thru the front bezel. Very cool.
