Default Accessing my XP install without deleting the bootloader?

Ok so I have a tri-bnoot of XP Home, Vista Ultimate and Suse 10.2 at the moment, I can access my Sue 10.2 install and my Vista Ultimate install but the Xp install comes up with.

\system32\hal.dll is missing please re-install, now looking around I know pretty much how to get the file back but I it seems to be linked to the windows bootloader which I don;t want, can I put the file back without making my Linux install dissapear?

You should just be able to replace that file using the recovery console, launched from your XP disc.

HAL is the Hardware Abstraction Layer, which various Windows components use to talk to hardware... im pretty sure it won't affect your 3 way boot loader but don't quote me on that.

Even if your other OS's do dissapear, I can help you configure a boot loader such as GRUB to boot them.

Everytime you mess with Linux something bad happens. That better not be on my XPS!

You should manually mount the drives on your suse instlal. It should be a matter of detecting the partition and then just mounting it to a folder.

mnt {hard drive} {mount location}

Well Since AVI and MP3 are liscensed to corperations, they cannot be packaged with linux for legal reasons. Instead linux comes with open source stuff like ogg support and the Matroska Container for files. To get avi/mp3 to work in linux varies from distro to distro. Since I have never used Suse myself, all I can do is provide you with a generalization.
For AVI, install Mplayer using the package management that suse provides and if that doesn't work, install the codecs to mplayer manually.
For MP3, Amarok comes with MP3 support to my knowledge, if not, look up some kind of codec package.

If only this were arch linux "pacman -S codecs" WINNER!

I had this problem once, with xine. there were a bunch of flags, turned off, so xine compiled without mp3 support, and, well, any kind of support, really.
try getting madlib, which is mp3 support, it stands for, mpeg audio decoder, and mpeg audio decoder spells good, well, until you hear flac
flac is very nice

Prime reason why I no longer run Gentoo.

Some distro's actually come with codecs. It really depends on what country the distro is based and the developers morals.
