Isn't it basically a "custom" version of Ubuntu?

Quote:
Basically, it is 98% Ubuntu, with a few differences:

- Ubuntu has a fixed 6 months release cycle. Between each Ubuntu release, Linux Mint produces one or more releases with up to date packages.

- The artwork is different in Linux Mint. Our goal is to make the desktop as pleasant as possible. Although Ubuntu's artwork is really good, we believe it can be better.

The 2.1 page claimed it had tools to improve out-of-the-box 802.11 support, and media playback. I'll believe it when I see it (downloading now)... bet it still don't make my stupid off-brand, chipset-maker-no-longer-even-wants-to-admit-the-product-exists Marvell 8335-based card sing WPA2.

yes, it is a modded ubuntu
but its going in its own direction
read some of the things about the upcoming version and all the cool tools linux mint has

as far as 802.11 support
thats the only spot im having trouble
i have awsome wireless on the live cd, and it was pretty good on the first boot after the install
but once it updated and restarted.. bam.. no more worky wireless

other than that little quirk.. i love mint..
but im in edgy 64 as of now..

anyways, if anyone comes across a way to make my wireless work.. it would be awsome!

I'm sure I could help you out, maybe if you listed the card model and if you know what chipset it has. It probably used a pre compiled module and when you updated "LinuxMint" (/me chuckles) it probably updated the kernel which made the module incompatible.

Eh, that's not a prob. I was there before. I'll try and write up some instructions for you tommorow morning, I'm about to get to bed. Do me a favor though and and type "uname -a" in a console and post the output in this thread.

Ok that's what I was looking for. Just curious, in Ubuntu and it's derivatives when it installs a new kernel it will keep the old kernel in the list in GRUB. When you boot, if it doesn't give you menu press escape, and see if it has the old version of the kernel and boot into it. Your wireless might just work fine that way.

There really is no need to upgrade kernels, unless you are having problems with the current running kernel or you are looking to gain some more features from the kernel. (Hardware compatibility, filesystem support etc.)

EDIT: Personally if it wasn't for the non-commercial OSS (Open Sound System) being so shaty and the "free" commercial version of OSS not being very good with multiple sound devices, and installing ALSA seperate from the kernel being such a b!tch, I'd still be using a 2.4.x kernel.
