Default Help with Kubuntu

Ok, so it looks like I have the Linux bug again....I have used Mandrake back in the day and now want to try Kubuntu.

I have XP installed on my Raptor and want to install Kubuntu on my other HD however I want to be able to chose what OS to run. So how would I go about doing this. Any help will be welcome, thanks guys!

( I had Mandrake set up like that but it has been so long I dont want to kill my XP install )

I actually just got my Kubuntu cd's in the mail, heck yea. Well you need to run the installer and install on the second hard disk, and then switch boot prority when you want to boot up windows, since i know your cgoing to run kubuntu as the first disk. should be simple, really depends on you boot menu, my DFI has a a bootmenu when you hit Esc, so its pretty simple to dual boot on seperate HDD, especially since i do run windows to bench alot.

Lol thanks I forgot that DFI has a boot menu like that

So i went into that (just to test it out) and when I selected my raptor where XP is it did not boot......I got a disk error....

However when I selected my other HD XP loaded.....I take it this means the MBR is located on the non XP disc..that makes no sense to me.....and I am sure it will cause problems if I install Kubuntu on the second drive.

Is there a way to change the MBR so that is it on the Raptor...I remember seeing something along those lines before.

*Edit*

Or I guess I can reinstall XP with the other drive disconnected.

The MBR is definately on the raptor, whats your boot setup like

mines either

First: CDrom
Second: Hard disk

or

First: Hard disk (for benching)

But theres another menu to put the HDD's in boot order, the MBR is almost always on the windows drive, and if not it should be on the primary master, so that would take a jumper or cable switch if it isnt.

I loaded Kubuntu the other day to run some super_pi to see some differences from edubuntu, kubuntu, redhat, and ubuntu, still havent finished those test, the weather outside is just toooo damn cold to be messing with linux, i opt instead to break some of my records on hwbot. anyhow how everything works with the MBR post an update, post linux install.

Yah that is what I thought...hmm still dont understand y it would not boot after I selected the Raptor...
It may be because I have my USB harddrive connected, I have had that problem before...hmmm let me check real quick.....

errr, lilo and grub
you don't need to change boot order

I dual boot from one hard drive
there're four partitions on it, on for Windows, and three partitions for Linux, one for the boot image, one for the swap space (swap space is like a page file), and one for the root directory

you can use the lilo and grub boot loaders to dual boot
when the computer starts, and after it posts, you can set it up so a menu will ask you what to boot
in this case, Linux or Windows

edit
gosh, I should get to bed

Yah I know about them, however my linux install will be on another HD, how would I go about setting up grub (the one I will be using) to reconize both installs and give me the option for linux or windows....
(I just got up so I am gunna try and install Kubuntu now )
O and thanks for all the help peeps

I believe that when you install kubuntu, it will automatically install Grub wherever your MBR is.
This only becomes a minor pain later when you want to remove it (even though I know you won't) because you have to go to windows recovery console and run fixmbr.

Well I got Kubuntu up and running :woohoo:

I used the DFI boot menu and that worked fine, I was able to boot into XP or Kubuntu...

Now if I can just get my wireless card to work in Kubuntu I will be good to go!

When I try to enable the device it does not work just stays disabled, so if any one has any ideas shoot them my way.

with grub, it might look something like this

default 0
timeout 30

title=Kubuntu Linux
root ( hd1, 2 )
kernel /kernel-2.6.18 root=/dev/hdb3

title=Windows XP
rootnoverify ( hd0, 0 )
makeactive
chainloader +1

at least, I think that's how it works
and IM not sure about the kernel version, it maybe something other than the 2.6.18
and you can change Kubuntu Linux and Windows XP to what ever you like

it is a motorola....

But with some help from #!/mason/brain I was able to get the connection running. I had to use ndiswrapper and install the windows driver and then the card came up and would connect, after I configured everything.

My next job is to get the Nvidia drivers working, gunna do that when I get home today. It is slow going but as long as I am learning something I dont care.

Good to know we have another user learning the ways of linux!

P.S. I am not a windows hater... windows can play games! and well on linux video encoding sucks at least from my experience (dvd::rip and avidemux2) wine works great though but programs run so much better on the native system virtualized systems fly though I guess I need to try that out!
