| Apex Advanced Techie | I'm sort of a linux newb, I've been using an old fedora core system to toy around with for some time. I happen to have lots of computer parts sitting around so I decided to build myself a decent linux rig a few days ago. I popped in an Opteron 144, 1 gig ocz enhanced pc3200, and a Jetway 939gt3-ptd. The mobo choice was questionable but I picked it up from a friend for only a few bucks, and it was micro-atx and would fit into a small case I have. I strapped it all together and booted it up perfectly, installed the latest Ubuntu (6.10 edgy, 64 bit) and now I'm running into a few problems. First off, the system is running extremely slow. My old Fedora system was using much slower hardware, but seemed to run faster. When I took a look at the system info here it claims that I have 444mb of ram, when in actuality I have 1024. My processor is also listed as 1000mhz, as opposed to the 1800mhz it runs at stock. This is true in both Sysinfo and the hardware monitor program I chose to list this as software problem because my bios identifies the processor and ram correctly when the system boots, i only encounter problems after loading linux. It could however be a hardware problem, in which case I'm in the wrong place! Any suggestions? I'm stumped. ![]() | |

| well, try and single out where the problem really lies... you know that Nix is showing you erroneous data, and there is probably a good reason for it, try booting up into the BIOS and see if it tells you any different, and if it does, you can be sure the problem, at that point, is Nix and not your actual hardware, beyond that, im clueless... | ||

As I previously stated, the bios displays the information for both the cpu and ram correctly, hence I believed it to be a software problem. As far as singling out where the problem really lies, I've tested each stick of ram individually, and it still boots. With a single stick of 512 it reads 444mb, the same as it does with 2x 512mb. I'm a fish out of water here, I'm going to try and find a windows cd to install and run cpu-z on the system. It really shouldnt take me 30+ seconds to load a program when I'm using 1gig performance ram and a good processor. Edit: works fine in Windows, must just be some kinks in 6.10 edgy that need to be worked out. Last edited by hazardous; 24-November-06 at 06:06 PM. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||

| I dunno bout *buntu installs at all but I'd be more than happy to help if you ever tried Gentoo. As far as the CPU thing I have one idea. Maybe *buntu has enabled the AMD Powernow driver in the kernel and has a cpu frequency throttling daemon running? I have a 3200+ desktop that stocks in a 2.0 Ghz, but w/ the Powernow module loaded and cpufreqd running it'll automatically slow down to 1.6Ghz or 800Mhz depending on the current processor load. This is on a desktop AMD 64 3200+. (Even the desktop models support frequency throttling). If that's the case run something intensive (ex: run an instance of folding@home) for a few minutes and the do cat /proc/cpuinfo. If it is indeed just frequency throttling your CPU should've kicked up to its max freq. As for the RAM. This is just reallllly wild guess. In your kernel have you set up high memory support (4G)? I dunno how it would act in *buntu as I don't use it, but in all my desktops if I have over 800MB it'll only show up as 800MB until I enable the high memory support. | ||
