| I am running SuSE 10.1 and I am getting some weird stuff. I enclosed 2 screenshots to show you what I mean. First of all when I click on my computer it gives me an error message. And secondly, when I try to get the processor info it shows up as only 1000 MHz! I am running my A64 3500+ at 2.45GHz, so I know it is reading something wrong. Also the performance isn't anywhere near where Windows XP is, as I have a dual boot. Can someone please get me sorted out? | ||

| Thanks for the link. Honestly, I could care less wether it correctly ID's my CPU, I just want it to run as fast as XP. I was told it manages memory better than Windows therefore making the performance better, but that's definately not the case here. | ||

| What kernel version are you running? I had a similar problem with my A64 on the 2.6.12 kernel. The only solution for me was building the 2.6.14 vanilla kernel from source. All the latest kernels (2.6.14 and above) seem to have solved this problem. Building from source has other advantages as well as you can enable all kinds of performance tweaks for your processor and memory. Most distros aren't great performers out of the box. If you want to take advantage of the speed linux can provide you, you'll have to get your hands dirty. | ||

| Whoa, slow down there bro! I am not a total Linux n00b, but I guess you could still consider me one. I have no idea what kernel version I am running. I know it is 2.6 something, but other than that IDK. I don't have a problem getting my hands dirty, but Windows is my native OS. I can basically do anything with it, and Linux is the exact opposite. Do you think you could give me some pointers to better the performance? | ||

| Follow this HOWTO. It works on nearly every distro, and it covers just about everything except what optimizations to choose when you get to the code: Code: #make menuconfig I know it looks daunting, but it really isn't. Just take your time, and don't miss any steps. Remember...in your case...you can always go back to windows. This is really the only way to optimize your hardware in linux, so you kinda have to do it. If you have any questions, just post them up. | ||

| No problem! I was basically going to type you up a HOWTO myself, and decided that fermented malt & hops got the best of me today. I would told you the same thing anyway. One thing to keep in mind is to make sure all of the requirements are taken care of---especially the C+ compilers. Most distros have them built-in, but it doesn't hurt to try to install them anyway---just to be sure. | ||
