HI
so ive been using ubuntu alot recently, but the thing that keeps me going back to windows is my audio is garbage, no matter what player i use.. ( i have the players that came with automatix ) but no matter what watch, or listen to.. or what type of file it is.. the audio is still crap.. scratchy, crap..

like trying to listen to earphones at full blast across a room..

also, i ran the updater today, (as it said i had updates and got this error....

It is impossible to install or remove any software. Please use the package manager "Synaptic" or run "sudo apt-get install -f" in a terminal to fix this issue at first.

so im gonna try the sudo code.. but what could have caused this. ..

E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?

What sound card do you have? Perhaps it is using the wrong drivers for an obscure sound card. Also, try typing alsamixer in a console and play with all the sliders to see if any has an impact. (F2 -> F4 change between Playback, recording and 'all')

It looks like an install was canceled or crashed while it was running or other wise did not install some software fully.

This usually means you have apt-get, synaptic or another such packaging component running. To ensure the system's integrity you can only have one running at a time. Check with the system monitor to see if apt-get, dpkg or synaptic is running in the backround for some reason. If you do not find a running copy, the easy way to fix might be to restart. Though you could also look for the lock file in the directory it gave and try deleting it.

Well, if its the xorg update that killeed your install, just do this.

When it boots up to code, enter your usrname and psswrd, and type this.

sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-core=1:1.0.2-0ubuntu10

It will downgrade to the previous version of xorg.

Then just restart and your good to go.

and im using the integrated audio on my asus mbd

It seems I am having the same problem. The sound is staticy, Hmm It seems that if you have the eq up too high it distorts the Audio. In winamp this is no problem for me, but on XMMS it might take a bit of playing around.

howd you get winamp
with wine.. i couldnt get it to work..


if i had winamp i wouldnt have to mess with anything..
xmms wont work worth a ****.. and xine has some werid problem with not showing up.. the control panel is weird colored blur.. and i cant use it..
as a matter of fact xmms wont play audio at all
and i really wanted something to work..


im a total NewB still but im trying.. as soon as my 3rd hard drive comes in im gonna do a full wipe on my OS hdd and reinstall everything anyways.. so i want to learn how to fix things now.. lol
