I'm a little confused -- is that a brand of an LCD monitor you mean? I guess what gets me is that if that is true, I've never heard of VLS as a company (VLS is a well-known media streaming server at www.videolan.org).

You need to find out what controller chip the LCD display uses. There are several linux apps out there for controlling most common chips. If it turns out to be hitachi hd44780 based you are really in luck.

EDIT

Just found a review over at extrememhz.com stating that it is HD44780 compatible. There is a ****ton of software for these under linux.

LCDProc
lcd4linux
lcdmod

I'm currently using lcdmod and writing my own script for control. I've used the others though so if you need help let me know.

It looks like a normal LCD, if you knew what controller it uses you can use it with the parallel port.

From the what the review says it's parallel based with a simple serial backpack.

EDIT

BTW what distro/kernel version are you running?

Let me do a little digging to see just what you need to set up a serial LCD. The 4x20 I have in my main rig is parallel. lcmod might not actually work for serial but there are several programs that do. I'll get back to this shortly.

Serial is easy. Its 2 lines that go to the serial port on the computer, I believe its RS and TS.

Looks like lcdmod only does parallel. lcdproc may be your best bet for now, I'll do some a little research on your display and get back to you soon.

Been working a lot lately. Get lcd4linux and lcdproc over at soureforge.net. You will need to read the docs. Start by trying the crystalontz serial drivers and any other serial drivers. I don't have this display so I can't do it directly. Let me know the results.
