Default Good Linux book?

I am haveing a hard time in my class with Linux. We use Redhat 7.2 at school, and I have the new Fedora core installed on some of my folding borgs and my laptop.

The CLI stuff is killing me! Can any of you reccomend a book I can get for Lunux? I know there is a ton of stuff on the interweb, but I learn better from a book.

Heck, it took me almost 40 mins to figure out how to install flash player on my school computer. My textbook is not helpfull, but they seem to love some Linux commands on the tests!

Any help with this is greatly appreciated!

In general, you can't go wrong with Oreilly books, specifically Running Linux - http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/runlinux5/

I also strongly suggest Linux for Dummies as it helped decode a LOT of the mumbo jumbo for me - http://www.dummies.com/WileyCDA/Dumm...764579371.html

Now, if you want something that focuses on the CLI in dead tree form, I also suggest having a copy of Linux in a Nutshell - http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/linuxnut5/

Those three books should cover just about EVERYTHING you need to know. What ISN'T there, you can find at www.tldp.org. Lots of good community written texts that you can download in PDF format and print on your own.

Buy them online too. Barnes and Noble rips you off. Amazon is the first place to check.

I can't believe I forgot about that!! when I first started showing interest in learning about Linux, the guy who put me on the right learning path started me off with some simple Bash examples. His exact words were "The best way to learn linux is by DOING" so I'm going to say the same to you, too. TLDP's got an EXCELLENT set of bash scripting guides, and like I said, download and print the PDF if you need a deadtree version. Or, if you prefer the professionally bound style, go for that Oreilly book.

Once you learn to be comfortable in the CLI, the rest is only a matter of putting the right tool into the right situation.

I'm FAR from being a linux expert, mind, but because I got comfy with the basics a few years ago, I know it's just a matter of practice now. I'm actually running through some courses at my job for the LPI (Linux Professional Institute) certifications, and let me tell you, the certs are a LOT easier than one would think. It's just a matter of remembering what tools to use in specific situations, and making sure you are open to CONSTANT learning.

GIven the distro you are running I would recommend The Red Hat Bible. The newer editions cover Fedora as well.

Ya I got a few LPI certs, they were a breeze. I'm going back for the Novell Linux certification also. Oh and I also have the CompTia Linux cert.

Default Thanks

I appreciate all the responces and will be getting a book soon. I realize that Google is cheaper, but I seem to retain more information reading a well written book.

Have a good one! And sorry about the late reply.
