You don't need a high end video card for Xgl... It doesn't take much to any of the suff Xgl does, unlike Windows Vista. It would probably run on a Geforce2.

Why in the world would you want any of those visual enhancements? It'd be cool for like, 5 minutes, then it'd just be annoying.

Though, the transparency with the alt+tab is pretty nice.

What distro are you trying to run it on? I may be able to help, I have succesfully set it up on Debian and Gentoo. Be aware it is still quite buggy and only about 70-80 percent complete.

There's a live CD to show case the she-bang. Im downloading it now. Looks like half an hour to go, its 452.4Mb and the france server seems to be quite quik (200KB/second).
Nice find

Edit - darn! My speed just dropped to 100KB/s and is continuing to fall

Ok, I tried it. It started off looking quite nice and was even pretty quick for a live CD. The effects all worked very smoothley and most of them arent very useful. It comes with some games (mainly card games and board games), some media applications such as the Gimp and Totem. The more I used it the more I began to dislike it. When I changed themes, the theme manager would crash, I couldnt play any audio and when I tried to, the system pretty much locked up for a minute ago then something would crash but it did come with the nVidia graphics drivers which is pretty cool.
Other than the effects, the cd isnt great, and the effects get old quik

That live cd is great to preview the stuff. You dont need to know a lick of code, just slap in the cd and go. I find these tools very usefull because i love to have a million windows open at the same time. The transparency effect is very useful.

I like the "F12" fucntion quite a bit. I suppose its kind of like expose only for linux!
The Alt+Tab thing is also useful and cool.

I think im going to try this on my sister's computer to see how it runs. She has an Athlon XP 1.7Ghz or something and integraded graphics by SIS. The system is four years old now so I think itll be intresting.

Ok, I know this thread is almost defunct, but I have to post this.
Right now Im downloading RR64 3.0b1 (codename: The Flame Still Burns) linkie here.
Its supposed to have xgl and a shlew of other programs I have a need for (mainly GStreamer and amaroK).
I guess I'll announce how it works. There's about 40 minutes left of the download, which is a tad over 2.5GB.

Man... what a trip! Compiz is all about one thing:

Pimpin!

I just installed it on my main desktop (running SuSE 10.0) and I'll be darned if it didn't blow my mind. My wife was freaking out over the whole "rotating cube" thing. I could seriously freak out some Windows diehards with this... however, I did notice a few weird things about it, since I'm running it in KDE, and it was designed for Gnome (why, who the heck knows). My multiple desktop pager in KDE doesn't show the 4 desktops, just the one... and I couldn't get the cool "rain-water" effect working, I guess I need to play with the key shortcut settings or something. It's creepy! You can even see the webpage's animated flash thingies moving while the cube is rotating....

This is A-100% PIMP!
