Default Best distro for VMware use

Just wondering which one of the distro's would be best as an OS for setting up a linux only VMware machine

I currently have all of the following distro install disks on hand, but if theres one you/someone thinks would be better I can always get that one.

Fedora 8 - Linspire - PClinux - Midnight BSD - OpenSuse

Thanks for any advice

Ubuntu or OpenSuse would be my choices. I have no experience with OpenSuse, but i know a few people who use it regularly and say its great.

I have used Ubuntu quite a bit. Its an easy install and pretty simple to use, while not taking away the power user features.

I've really only played with Linux unfortunately so I don't know if could be any help, but i'm willing to try

I run about 16 VMware linux boxs. ShiftLinux and LinuxMINT (both ubuntu derivatives, PCLinux is as well) work great, but again they are just ubuntu with added stuff.

My personally favorite distro is Slackware, it has a bit of understanding to install (no LIVE). But when it comes to usage and basic GUI I love it. I have two of them in VMware.

I have had the best luck learning and using Ubuntu. I am wondering if you are setting up a vmware image or a machine to run vmware on. Ubuntu would work great for either and i have done both.

From what i gather you're going to install linux in the VM to get to grips with it? How about building your own distro?

It'll teach you a lot and give a completely custom distro tailored to your needs specifically.

If you're just looking for something to play around with then maybe you should consider live CD's. Much easier than setting VMware up and the hassle of configuring it.

May the force be with you
