Default Ubuntu vs. nVidia GeForce Go - and I'm losing

So, I tried to run an Ubuntu Live CD. First I got the wrong one, now I got the right one and it still won't load properly.
Oh, it completes the booting-process and everything but I can't get a proper picture. I see a cursor but apart from that it's just thin vertical stripes - about 1x10 pixels with 100px between them on each side.

I have a nVidia GeForce Go 6150 and I heard there could be problems, but I didn't read anything about no picture at all. The thing is, how could I change/do something when I can't see anything?

Help?

EDIT: Okay, I could start Ubuntu in the safe graphics mode in an aweful resolution something like 800x600 (and now I feel even more stupid).

Default Re: Ubuntu vs. nVidia GeForce Go - and I'm losing

one thing you could do is manually set a resolution.
you could press control + alt + F1 through F6 (F7 is where the x server runs) when in the x server to get a console. from this console, edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf with either pico, or nano, or vi, or vim, or some text editor as root. now look for the section called Screen. in that section add a line that reads
Code:
DefaultDepth 24
then in the subsection with the corresponding depth, add a line like
Code:
Modes "1440x900"
in the line above, 1440 x 900 would be the resolution. you could also try putting in "nvidia-auto-select" as the resolution

now switch back to the x server (alt + F7) and press control + alt + backspace to restart the x server

I think this should work
please let me know if it doesn't
