Default Running Windows Application on Ubuntu

Another Linux problem:

I'm creating a new PC for my Dad. He wants it for word processing, email and internet. I was thinking of putting Ubuntu on it for him, however he also needs to run a Windows-only application.

Is there any way I can run this windows application on Ubuntu?

Thanx

Depends on the program.

WINE, it's a set of windows API's lets, lets you run windows apps in Linux.

Depending on the program, it may or may not run.

Check here for whether or not the program you need to run is working under WINE yet.

Also, be sure to google the program name + WINE to see if there's someone who has posted up a way to get it working that hasn't been posted on the official WINE site yet.

For Office work theres Open Office or Some Other Eq. I know KDE makes a office suite, but I havent tried it yet. For Email theres Thunderbird. For Calculations theres Speed Crunch. For Conversions to different Units theres ConvertAll. For Movies theres Kaffeine (with the proper codecs) and XMMS for Mp3's.

Maybe Kubuntu is better suited, since its almost like a graphical Windows Environment.

Yeah I've already got OpenOffice; the application I need is a windows-only application, and it's a custom-built "reference library" of sorts, built on, and for, Windows technology.

Fortunately, though, I've found some tutorials on how to run it with wine.

Thanks for the help waffles & drougnor; +rep comin' your way...

Virtual machine, aren't you a VM cert guy?

Just run a virtual machine in ubuntu, and have his windows only app run in it....

If it was my machine I'd probably do it, but because it's for my Dad I don't want to make things too complicated for him. He's not too tech savvy; the simpler the better for him...Moving him to Linux is probably too much of a change to begin with
