Default At last... I have found a home...

Hello all...
I hope you don't mind another new member pulling up a seat.
I'll start off with a question... I'm currently in mid-mod and I have purchased a small mirrored disco ball (about 3 inches in diameter) that I hope to have rotating in my case once completed. Does anyone know how I can get it rotating at a fairly sedate speed... I could use the motor from an old case fan by I fear that 2500rpm may cause it to trash the PC from the inside. What I'.m really after is a small motor that can run from the 12v power supply and turns at only about 10-20rpm.
Any ideas anyone?

Welcome to PR Duplo!
While I can't answer your question, I'm sure someone will be along shortly to help you out. The only thing I might worry about is the mass of the disco ball, relative to a fan. The fan motor would almost definitely be struggling to turn a ball with any significant mass. You might be able to put a resistor in the circuit to slow it down. Like I said, I don't know jack about electronics, but there are plenty of people here who I'm sure will provide a helping hand

WELCOME ABOARD!!

Pull up a seat by all means! Great to have more members!
There's TONS of good advice to be had here

A low RPM Motor would probably be the go (high RPM=noise)
What about undervolting the motor (put in a big resistor to provide it with the minimum voltage to get it going?)
The other option might be gearing it up - small cog on the motor, big one on the ball

I'm sure that there'll be some links coming your way shortly

Oh, BEWARE THE WELCOME WAGON!!!

EDIT: Just saw bionic's post

To get a motor to run slow, you can do 1 of 2 things. The first of which uses a simple pot, but those can be expensive if you use alot of power. The 2nd is one where you use a small vairable voltage regulator, and use a small pot to adjust it (you are adjusting the voltage that controls the motor which in turn controls speed)

As for the motors Gimmie a sec to find a couple through my sources.

Ok heres some, pretty cheap too,

And no, those arent all the same link

And Welcome to PR

And of course, I forgot, you can use gears too to get high torqe, and low RPM
