| Apex Techie Wannabe | I'm pretty new to all of this. The first time I opened my PC was to change the video card (that was nightmare that took almost a full year to become known) Recently, I started doing some work on my pc and thought, "Huh, I wonder what I can do with it?" So here I am. | |

| Apex Techie Wannabe | Thank you for the warm welcome! I just recently made the decision to build a new system. My current computer is just gettin' a little too old and slow (might be time to turn it over to my wife). I'd like to build a gaming computer (Pretty much the biggest reason for building one). My current dilemma: Intel or AMD? During my fitful bursts of research, I seem to be hearing alot of gamers preferring AMD. Is there a reason for this or is it just personal preference? Since I'm building from the ground up, any and all input would be greatly appreciated. This would be my first real PC build and I'd like it to be the first of many. Plus modding is definitely something I enjoy. | |

| Go with AMD. You wont be sorry. I wrote an Article On how much better AMD is at gaming than Intel is. But right now AMD is pretty much owning INTEL in everything. You could go with the X2 or FX 57 (if you have the money of course), but if you want low range go with socket 754, they do Offer A64 in that socket, but now socket 939 is becoming the socket A of yesterday. | Apex Techie Wannabe | As far as the Nightmare I refered to earlier, my Sony Vaio had a few problems. My inexperience caused me to instal an ATI 9800 Pro into it before checking if the system and the PSU could take it. WEll, after about a year, my PSU died and took the powerswitch, a few components on the Mobo and two of the one of the USB ports on the Mobo no longer work. After several attempts to get a little tech help from Sony. My frustration got the better of me (not to mention it would cost $20 to talk to a live tech, just so he/she would tell me to take it to a certified repair shop and charge a $300 flat repair rate!) so I ended up getting out the 'ol multimeter and my old electronics manuals I used in the Navy. After finding and carefully replacing a few resistors and a burned out LED (How did that happen?) and replacing the PSU, I fired the system up. Oddly enough, It came on and is working fine (considering it is a P4 @1.6 Ghz) Anyway, To make that long story a little longer, I'm going to build my own PC and then Mod the heck out it! | |

Vaio! I know the feeling ...... My first rig was a Vaio Digital Studio 490TV . Worked fine for about two years and then all the software (spyware) that Sony imbedded into the system (supposedly for auto-updates) started filling up the hard drive to max capacity. Then, the rig started random freezes. Sony tech help was useless! I pulled out all the Sony software, which helped, but found the worst culprit was that the unit would overheat. I installed an additional fan into it and it's been my wife's faithful and reliable companion ever since. But through all of this and having been watching and learning on this site, I learned that building your own was best. Have fun. Lots of knowledgeable people here to help. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
