600 ft is 200 yards so I think it could work. A couple of good wireless routers at each site.
It may not be the best connection though. 2 miles, probably not, unless your an Engineering God.

Whats breaking the bank in your book? Buffalo antennas run about $200 and they'll easily cover that range. Try this site though it isn't as hard as you'd think to build your own AntennaHowTo - Seattle Wireless

Ironically i had this same question once, we instead hardwored 150FT of GiB cable accross the gap (underground, in a PVC pipe) but would a wireless acess link (like a linksys) easily cover about 100ft, or would an aftermarket anntenna be needed?

too bad we'd need a transformer to get an ethernet signal across two miles
besides the fact we can't lay two miles of cable above or below ground in nyc

A few months ago I was trying something similiar. I saw this at the tigerdirect store and picked one up. Worked great!

i hate to shatter the myth, but cantenna's ( pringle can antenna or Yagi) and everything close to it is not just for war driving. just because people use it for WD, doesnt mean you cant use it for your situation.

here is a link for a DIY supply site
JEFA Tech Home

here is a site on how to build a cantenna with 96db ( about 15 mile range )
Pringles Yagi Antenna
also, he talks of using the antennas to do exactly what you are trying to do.

so set one of these up on your roof and point it at your buddy's house and your set. you can either build it, or you can buy a directional dish. you have plenty of options.

just dont get in the mindset that this can only be used for 1 thing, and nothing else.

find out what type of connection your router has for its antenna, and buy the correct pigtail adapter. either build or buy the antenna you want and connect and go.

range was ok but nothing amazing. I picked up a few connections from down the street. The biggest problem is finding wifi with no passwords.

maybe use netstumbler or something to pick up those type of networks, but then you are talking about something that we arent suppose to here.

i was just under the impression you were trying to basicly connect your network with your buddys down the street.
