![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | my friend used 2 direct tv sat dishes with the wireless antenna mounted on it for a 3 mile range. you have to "tune"it by playing with the location of the antenna on the dish. I read somewhere that someone got 14 miles like that, but maybe the used a diff kinda transmitter. ![]() isnt the world record (done in Nevada)like 42 miles with 8 foot sat dishes and stock routers.

here is says the record would be 80+ miles, no specific, but says with two of them you'd have it for two it would be around a grand but just think you and your buddys across town would be linked

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I bet you could run Ethernet underground in NYC. Do it at night. Label the cable "Dept. of Homeland Security" every 50 ft. No one would ever mess with it. -MF |

| Apex Techie Wannabe | Is it that you want to share internet or just be on the same network because if you both had your own internet conection you could always get two VPN routers and create a tunnel then it would work as if you where both on the same network

| Apex Master Tech | I rember a guide which asuming you had LOS could give 10mbs via focused LEDS with upto 10mile range but can't find it. If only a low bandwidth connection is needed you can use hamachi and the internet to get a vpn up in about a minuite: Hamachi : Stay Connected (btw this program seriously rocks) Or if not then this product could do the trick? TrangoLINK-10 Wireless Ethernet Bridge |

![]() ![]() | For $250, you have a lot of options, depending on speed, complexity, actual cost, etc. The most obvious solution is to buy two high quality wireless routers (one of which operates as a client) and make high gain antennas out of old satellite dishes. BTW, most wireless routers can be overclocked (although only a few popular units actually have known mods) for longer range. However, it's a good idea to install heatsinks on the chips inside to prevent overheating. Of course, if you found a way to softmod the router (like with DD-WRT) and don't want to void the warranty, you could just set a fan near it. Don't forget that both sides must be overclocked to take advantage. You can also softmod many routers to use extended channels. Most low cost routers can only use channels 1-11, but a softmod can allow them to use channels 12,13, and maybe even 14. Note that 12 and 13 are close enough to be interfered by 11 (and to a lesser extent, some lower channels) so take that into consideration. 14 is far enough from 11 that it should not interfere, but most wireless chipsets don't support it. If you don't need much speed, you could modify some 56K modems to connect using CB radios. |

that would be illegal as the frequncys they use are resevered for voice transmisions not data, it would also annoy alot of CB radio enthusiasts if there are any in your area. | |||||||||||||||||||||||

![]() | CBers are not something I would be afraid of, but the FCC can come in and take all equipment attached to a device creating interference on a regulated frequency. (CB is regulated in the fact that it is voice only, no data.) |
