Default The "My Network Places" Problem.

Hey guys.

Basically I'm having trouble getting computers to see eachother on My Network Places.

I know this is a common problem but I spent most of last night and all of this morning trying to resolve it with no avail.

I recently just got a new laptop. When I connect it to the network nothing comes up in my network places.
Ive tried:
  • Changing the work group to match the network
  • Turning off firewall
  • enabling "simple file sharing" under tools
  • I DO have files enabled for sharing
My desktop can see the laptop as an "unknown" computer under it's MNP (my network places). But when I click on one of the shared files it gives me an error saying it cannot find the path.

I've played and tweaked everything I can think of and I'm out of ideas.

Help?

Do you have Norton Internet Security? That kills 'My Network Places' stone dead unless you have a proper fiddle with it.

Using AVG and Zonealarm.

Another UPDATE:
Ok, so i can view the other "workgroup computers" But i cannot see the shared files under my network places. On my desktop there are all the shared files on the network in My Network Places. Why is there non on the MNP on my laptop.

Try turning on View network icons for UPnP devices on, then restart, you will then be able to see your router, (hopefully). If you still can't see what your looking for then go into your router and find out which IP your laptop is being assigned and write it down.
Now go to the run command and type \\ENTER YOUR IP HERE\ this should open up the main shared folder on the machine.

For Example mine would be \\192.168.1.2\

I had an identical problem, using Zonealarm. You need to go into the firewall into the zones section and add each IP that needs to access that computer to the trusted zone. That should help with zonealarm. Now the other thing is if you goto run and type "CMD" in hit enter then type "IPCONFIG" that will tell you the comptuers IP address as well as the gateway etc. also with a command prompt open you can do

/ping 192.168.0.? that will let u check to see if they see each other and can talk. (assuming your using the default gateway IP of 192.168.0.1 and your machines are spawned off of that basic)

goodluck
