| Hey fellow pcapexers. just wanna know if anybody could help me out. I wanna use two modems * upstairs (features wireless) * downstairs (normal adsl router) both will use the same internet but I want to somehow put them both on the same windows network so I can share files... I need to get rid of my server downstairs because with 2 pcs running in my tiny room is is bloody killing me with the heat! cheers Dan-NZ | ||

| I think a little more info is needed. Do you mean one adsl modem and a home network or 2 adsl modems and a home network? If you are talking about the former, then I see two easy options. Option #1 is one wireless router, if the wireless signal will reach upstairs, you are done. If the wireless will not reach that far, I would get a switch and hook it up to the adsl modem, and get a wireless switch and hard wire it to the first switch. Should get you up and going. If you are talking about 2 ISP connections and one network, I have no clue! Have a good one E | ||

| Okay, this does sound like you want to have two computers on the same network, the one upstairs is on a wireless signal, the one downstairs is hard-wired into your ADSL feed. the answer, as stated above, is simple. But I'll try to draw it out a little better: Take the network cable from your incoming ADSL line and instead of plugging it into the back of your downstairs computer, plug it into a combination wired / wireless router. (I use a USRobotics Router / Wireless router, had 4 ports of wired access and a 802.11g wireless. The model # is 8054) You would then hook a CAT-5 from the router to your computer in the basement, and now you've got access down there. Also, since the combo router handles wireless signal as well, you can now access the router wirelessly from your computer upstairs ... (Question: how far is "upstairs", and please keep in mind that there are impacts to range and quality of signal based on what your structure is made of ... see this post for details.) So here's what it would look like: ADSL Modem --> Combo Router --> CAT-5 line --> "downstairs" computer ADSL Modem --> Combo Router --> wireless signal --> "upstairs" computer That being said, think about all the security issues you'll need to cover with a wireless connection. Much of that information can be found in this article hosted / created by PCApex (Taz, I think did this one.) Good luck! -Godling | ||
