Default Connection sharing

Hey, So I'm using a dfi ultra-d and I notice that it has two ethernet ports. What I'm wondering is how can I get a singal through one, and send it out the other one.

This is to give a connection to another pc in my room.

Ok so you want to network without a router. Here is how you accomplish it:

1. Verify that your main computer with the connection to the internet has 2 NIC(10/100 ethernet) cards installed.

2. Go to a computer store and purchase what is called a crossover cable. usually the cable is one color and the plastic covers on the plugs are a different color(it helps to identify that it is a different type of cable).

3. Verify your connection to the internet and then plug the Crossover cable into the second NIC on the main computer and then plug the other end into the NIC on the computer you want to share the connection with.

4. enable internet connection sharing on the main cpu. Depends on your OS how you go about that.
Win 2000- right click network -> choose right click on the NIC card for your main connection to the internet-> choose properties and on the properties page there are 2 tabs(General and Sharing)-> choose sharing and click on the little box.

Windows Me- double click on the Network Neighborhood and run the home networking wizard.

5. Reboot

6 should work now

I think that should cover ya, or if you are real creative and have lots of cable around, you could attempt to make your own by cutting/splicing one.... or possibly repinning it (Don't know if that's possible)

A network hub is pretty cheap these days if you catch them on sale, and would probably set you back just a few bucks more than the damn crossover cable!

Or you could have someone who pitys people who don't use google before asking rather simple questions to give you nice simple straightforward howto on how to set it up.

Ok, cept I did google it, do you want my history?

Google hasnt helped much, mostly becuase the "Enable Connection Sharing" box, isnt even showing up on my LAN connection.

I'm supposed to run the first pc as Connect directly to the internet, except it messes up, and ends with an error.

It ends with this:

an error occurred during the configuration of this network

Not much to go by if you don't tell us the error. May have made sense to include it in your original post also...

You could always try the "Setup a home or small office network" wizard.

EDIT: Ok, I see you posted the error now. Do you have any services disabled that are normally enabled by default, such as the "Server" service in services.msc?

EDIT: You don't have the enable connection sharing box, but yet you can somehow enable it and produce an error? Right...

Yah, that was my bad, It let me share with me 1394 connection, and I thought that might have been the other ethernet port, I found out what it is.

So basically, my problem stands, I cant run the setup wizard and tell it that I am directly connected to the internet.

LOL..I must be "The Fool" that pittied him eh?

I started my reply before you had posted yours, so I did not see it until after the fact...
( I almost went back and edited it to note that, but said eh...oh well, back to bench testing, no harm in adding my 2 cents since I had put in a few other options)

I did not have much luck with google myself initially...ended up going to "ASK.com"

I was a bit curiuos myself if it could be done, I was originally going to just say "Get a hub" on sale and call it good, but wanted to see if there were other options since I am not a network pimp.

just bridge the two adapters/connections in network configuration, lmao

EDIT: ok ok ill elaborate....

bridging them will create aunified connection out of the two ports, basically tunnelling the data from the "other" computer straight through yours, and directly to your router, then modem, then the Gibson...

...consider yourself "skooled"...

I solved my problem.

Turns out the router I have, isnt the problem, I had to open ports for stuff like my DoD:S server and ventrilo to work.

i am baffled as to how a "router" has anything to do with your original question dood...you wanted to know how to get your connection working through the 2nd LAN port on your motherboard -WITHOUT- using a router...if you are going to ask questions and not do thorough research on your own, at least ask the right questions...otherwise, anyone who tries to help you is wasting their time on your behalf because they gave you the benefit of the doubt...and it makes you look like a complete noob...

...this is starting to get annoying...

Ok.

I was under the impression that my router wasn't letting anyone from the outside connect to such things as my Ventrilo server. So I took it out of the picture, and wanted to use my pc to get the connection to my other pc.

*this diagram isnt working right.

-------> PC #1
Router .-----> Router (for distrobution) --|
-------> PC #2

It turns out that I needed to open the port that Ventrilo was using, to let ppl get in. I had it working before, but after taking my pc to someones house, and hooking it up, then bringing it back, the last digit of my pc's IP changed, thus, I had to change the IP that was assigned to Ventrilo's port.

Dont worry about it, problem fixed.

You can also setup up adress reservation on your router so that your IP never changes. It should be under LAN IP setup or something similiar.
