OK, so it would be faster for me to use a Cat5E or Cat6 crossover cable, than to use the wired 100mbs router with Cat5.

Yep, what i meant is: would it be faster to use the rated 1gb corssover cable, than it would be to use the 100mb/s router. Logic says it would be. And would be able to use the 1gb crossover cable with a standard non-1gb router without any problems? Or should i just mod a spare cat5????? (im transfering video files over 5gb, so the faster the better!) How much faster is the 1gb cable in real world compared to the standard Cat5 100mb/x.

| Well your transferring files, the glass cieling your gunna hit is with how fast the other compter can acept and store the data its being sent, your never going to be able to hit the theoretical 1gb. Using 1gb crossover cable will give you stupid speeds but your limted as to how much info can be processed at the other end. | ||

Well i dont know exactly how much cpu speed and or HDD speed play in this equation, but desktop is P4 3.0c HT cpu with SATA HDDs, and the notebook is a Core Duo 1.86 with mini-sata HDD. I guess that i will benefit from using a 1gb crossover cable.

| The fastest SATA drive on the market is the 10k RPM Raptors and they do not see more than a sustained transfer (Read) of more than 88 mb/sec so with a single drive configuration your 100mb link is more than sufficient there. Now if you are striping them in a RAID0... then yes you will want the gig NIC. Slower SATA drives are in the 57 to 78 range. Note: these are the maximum sustained values, YMMV | ||

| OK, well i picked up a 5m Cat5e Crossover cable, and its plugged into to both NICs however the connection is limited, presumably as DHCP is assigned automatically. I guess i should assigned the NICs to the same subnet! Also, will this still work whilst wifi is connected to the LAN/internet? | ||
