| My internet connection speed is around 9mb/s. But that is only when i connect my modem strait to my computer. With my router attached i only get around 3.5mb/s and not getting at all wha ti pay for. My router is just an old linksys router and i was wondering if that is the problem, and what would be a good router if i want to gain all of my internet speed. On another note though, i was also wondering if it was possible to run my modem directly into my computer and then run another ethernet cable out of my computer into my router to see if i would be able to retain the 9 mb/s. Anyways please comment and any feedback will be greatly appreciated. | ||

| if you are familiar with administrating your router (for Linksys, i believe its 192.168.1.1, cant remember the user/pass), you should try updating the firmware of the router, or at the very least, using the reset button to bring the router back to factory settings...if neither of these fix your problem, id say the issue lies in PPPoE, or the fact that your router or modem dont play well using "bridged mode"...which in either case will necessitate a newer router... EDIT: if you DO reset your router to factory settings, make sure you have your PPPoE information saved so you can reload it once the router is reset, otherwise you wont be able to get back online at all using that router... as a last resort, try turning off the firewall, or assigning DMZ to whatever IP address DHCP is handing out to your box (or whatever static ip you are using)... | ||

| Thank you for both your comments, i have decided to make less work, i will just buy a new router and see what it does for me. I like using a wired connection though ebcause i do not want to have any dropped signals at all, so how does this router sound.. DGL-4100 > Broadband Gigabit Gaming Router? or are there any other wired routers you would say would give me better results? | ||

| Who is your ISP and how much per month are you paying. Reason I ask is I bet if you are using C-NET or some freeware program that test isn't 100% accurate. Several reasons Cable (Comcast etc) is based on fraction service, you can tap out the full speed but not sustain that. The main central neighboorhood hub could have a long metric and many hops. DSL is better but still not perfect, you can sustain 500-768kbps and nice bursts on 1.5mbps+ T1 you can have fractional or fully functional, either way you'll see a continuos 56k per pipline with up to 64 lines. And yes all routers will lengthen the metric in which packets are sent and received to each PC. Not all routers especially consumer level ones feature Full-Duplex switching. ~Bob | ||
